Known for their supreme comfort and crystal clear sound quality, the Beyerdynamic DT series may seem hard to improve upon, but a custom paint job does just the trick. Whether you want the Maybach look of All Black Everything, some metallic contrast with the Chrome on Black, or a subtle oceanic accent with the Ring of Turquoise, a pair of Beyerdynamic DT Custom Mods will have you rocking superior sound and stunning style. Note: At check-out, if you select the DT880 in All Black Everything, you can choose between 32, 250, and 600 Ohms. If you select the DT990 in Chrome on Black or Ring of Turquoise, you can choose between 32, 250, and 600 Ohms.
While most cans make you choose between open and closed construction, the DT880 splits the difference with a semi-open design that allows for increased airflow and a wider soundstage. The isolation isn’t as strong as with other high grade models, but if you’re in the right environment, you won’t miss a detail. Bringing full depth and excitement to the entire range, the treble is smooth and extended, the midrange is transparent and detailed, and the bass is punchy and layered. To keep you comfortable and your cans in decent shape, the spring steel frame comes with a padded headband and soft ear pads, a minimalist construction that manages to maximize your listening pleasure.
As the construction is nearly the same between the models, we’ll skip right to the sound. There are many things to love about the DT990 sound, but if you’re a fan of the low end, you’ll be too engrossed to notice much else. Powerful and booming without blowing out, bass parts grow from background accompaniments to featured players, resonating with all depth and clarity you’ve been craving. As for the rest of the range, the highs are forward sounding and the mids are a little recessed, making for the perfect complement to that basshead bonanza. Throughout the entire range, the extra-wide soundstage brings you excellent instrument separation and near ideal sound imaging.
