I've got a set of SE535s and have generally been pretty happy with them. Just put a new set of Knowles filters in them and they have new life .... BUT with every new IEM drop that comes along I'm tempted. Saw the Nobles Kaiser but the $ were enough to dissuade me. This one is tempting. The question of course is will there be such a difference in SQ to justify the loss I'll take on selling the 535s to make room for DM7?
Anyone got experience with the 535s vs DM6 for example. With comply tips the 535s do sound good .... hmm maybe I'm already talking myselft out of it.
It suddenly took a philosophical turn XD
I have the 535s and the DM6. It's a close contest. On value the DM6 wins easily being less than half the cost. Fitwise the DM6 is comfortable, but it is a much larger shell than the Shure and they stick out beyond the ear so you can't lie down with them in. So on comfort the Shure wins easily - beats most of the iems I have ever tried. The DM6 is less functional for travelling or commuting. Sound wise the signature is significantly different. The 535s are more mid forward and I think they are better on vocals - male and female. The DM6 has better extension at both ends - and there is more bass quantity and treble detail. I think the DM6 have a wider soundstage. On resolution, instrument separation and clarity it's very close. There are a lot of posts on head-fi complaining the the DM6 has treble spikes, but that's not my experience at all. My pair is pretty balanced, and I have had no harshness problems. But the Shures are smoother and better for long listening sessions. If you didn't own either I would say get the DM6 because they are similar sound quality for half the price. Given that you have the 535s, don't expect the DM6 to be a clear upgrade. The DM6 would only be clearly superior if the signature suits your sonic preferences better. The DM6 are a great pair of iems, but if you buy them expecting them to be significantly better than the 535s, I think you will be disappointed.
You can check out those reviews on headfi for the unbiased ideas and some people has the experience with SE VS DM6.
Thank you for that very insightful responsen that helps a lot. The real underlying question for me was how will the 535s compare with the DM7s but since very few have heard the the 7s yet I was curious about the 6. Your insights about size are very helpful because I use my iem primarily when traveling so I sleeps in planes and hotels with them when im upside down in another time zone. If the DM6 is bigger than the 535 then the DMU will likely be bigger again so I'll stick with the Shures ... Thanks
