Available exclusively on Massdrop, these inks from the Birmingham Pen Company draw inspiration from noteworthy people, places, and events in Pittsburgh’s history. The ink is made in the UK and individually bottled by hand in Pittsburgh, and the label on each 30-milliliter bottle contains information about how that color got its name. There’s Battle of Ft. Duquesne | French Tricolor, named for the British assault on a French fort that was the original structure on what later become Pittsburgh. Frick Building | Stained Glass pays tribute to the city’s once-tallest building, while Grant Street | Weathered Brick calls to mind the historic brick road downtown. There’s something for the sports fans, too: Pittsburgh Bankers | Ice Rink, inspired by one of the first professional hockey teams, and Sport Donnelly | Grass Stain, named for the first professional football coach (also the second professional football player).
Note: At checkout, choose three inks from the following five colors: Battle of Ft. Duquesne | French Tricolor, Frick Building | Stained Glass, Grant Street | Weathered Brick, Pittsburgh Bankers | Ice Rink, or Sport Donnelly | Grass Stain.
Birmingham Pen Company is a small operation, and its team puts a great deal of time and care into making sure each formula delivers a reliable, consistent writing experience with your fountain pen. Every bottle is filled and labeled by hand in the owner’s Pittsburgh shop. Birmingham’s colors are often described as “smoky” or “muted” when compared to some other inks on the market. The owner, Nick, aims to deliver ink that’s professional enough to use for daily writing, with enough character and nuance to garner appreciation from discerning eyes.
