The reviews suggest this is a good dash cam, but I believe the reliability is still a question? I need a camera that will work in California hot temps, 20+ days over 38C/100F...much hotter in the car. Also, for the price there seems to be a lot of competition...

Well, I'm in the East Bay. Will let you know how this version works out if you willing to wait till summer. For the price and the competition, there are almost no other cameras with comparable features/image quality. FineVu/Lukas same quality, but more expensive and no wifi, Itronics ITB-250HD is bit more discrete, but 720p and no mph (Read company doesn't want to support us). Therefore, from the top dash cams BV DR500GW provides discrete installation, ability to show video on the scene using WiFi and tweak a lot of internals using Custom Firmware (Russians figured out all the embedded linux stuff that works on this cam). Also, you can easily change the lens to the 3.6mm to get more narrow FOV that will boost license plates readability if you are up to the tweaks!
