Would anyone care to explain how this product is >10x as nice as something like this, which can be had for under $30? http://amzn.com/B00E5XDZFU
I mean obviously this is a lot more slick-looking, and comes with a rear camera as well (although the rear is only 720p). Still though, even at the max drop, I'm having a hard time seeing the value proposition here.

VladBBlackVue DR650GW does have GPS, and the quality looks pretty damn good to me

I have a FineVue camera I got on here last year, quality looks about the same on the posted youtube videos. I've been thinking of upgrading to this to get both front and rear coverage.

Seems kind of silly to only start recording when it detects a collision. Why not hold the last 5 minutes, press button/collision to put that + keep recording into a video? The important stuff happens just before a collision, not after it. For a $400 camera I'd expect smarter design.d
I'd also like to see these things offer some smarter settings, like 4fps recording all the time (super small files but still gets important details you might not have realized to record), ability to connect to wifi when parked at home for backing up files (would let you record constantly), and higher quality microphones to properly catch audio after/during an incident.

SalmonSalmon, It doesn't start recording when it detects a collision.
While driving, it records continuously as 'DRIVING RECORDING'. When it detects collision, it records few minutes before/after the collision as 'EVENT RECORDING' to let you find the accident scene easily.
If you install uninterrupted power cable with this kind of car dash camera, after few seconds ~ 5 minutes, the camera goes into parking surveillance mode. Normally, there are two surveillance modes, shock-detection, and movement detection+shock detection.
The shock-detection mode is reliable, but only records after the camera detects sudden movement. For example, after park the car, first detection is usually when you close the door or trunk door. It doesn't use much electricity from the battery, so it usually lasts more than 2~3 days in ideal condition.
The movement+shock detection mode is little bit more complicated. The camera lens stays on even after going into parking surveillance mode, if it detects sudden change of scene(view from camera), it records few minutes before/after the situation. Because it uses much electric power, it is not recommended to use this mode if you are not driving everyday. It is ideal when you park the car facing a driveway or a road which has very little traffic. It is quite useful, but personally I think it is not reliable during nighttime if there is no streetlight nearby.
I am not sure about this specific model, but some dash cam has option to records 10 or 15fps instead of 30fps. However, I don't recommend you to do that, because it is really hard to recognise license plate with 15fps. Always better quality video helps better detection.
There are some Wifi-enabled dash cam are available in Korea, you can connect with your iPhone or any other smartphones. Also, there are many dash cams with LCD display.
Based on my experience, you don't want to store driving records if there was no accident, because it is useless.
Modern dash cams erases older files when the cards is full, so it doesn't max out, and when it erases the older records, it doesn't erases 'EVENT RECORDINGS', it only erases 'DRIVING RECORDINGS.'
However, it is highly recommended to backup, and format the SD card for time to time. For example, once a week if you drive everyday, or once a month if you drive not frequently.
Most dash cams offers card formatting function, so you don't really need to format it with your PC. Some brand-new dash cam models say they don't need to be formatted at all, but I think it is always better to backup and format regularly to check the cam and SD card is properly working.
Because the dash cams writes excessively to SD card, SD card lasts quite short. Some low-quality SD card lasts even less than a month. So, if you are planning to use a car dash cam, you MUST buy good quality MLC-type SD card with longer warranty, and large capacity.

I am so surprised that this kind of camera is too expensive in US market. 'BlackVue' is made in Korea, and this kind of model costs so much lower here in Korea.
For example, DR750 (16G Memory) costs about $320 only. (with 3 year warranty, Power Magic Pro is optional) Moreover, BlackVue is not the most popular model in Korea. There are some far much better maker/models.
For example, one of most popular flagship-grade model is FineVu CR-2000G (16G Memory), which costs only about $330, including FineSafer S (uninterrupted power cable), and 1 year warranty. This model has SONY Exmor CMOS sensor, both channel records 1920x1080@30fps.
Maybe I have to consider to sell those via ebay, hmmm...

gyuhang.choThat FineVu is huge though and not particularly good for someone who wants a low key camera. What other options are there for people who want a stealthy unit?

Questions: 1. how many hrs ofvideo does hold with the 128 sd card? 2. how easy is the install? 3. how user friendly is it? 4. can u turn off so it does not drain the battery when not driving (what is the optional power supply?)?

ProTraineryou can add any micro sd card capacity as long as you format the partition to FAT32. The power supply has your choice of recording time 6,12,24 and 48 hours. after that the camera will automatically shut off.

I've finally received mine from March drop a bit over a week ago. I'm pretty happy with it, upgrading from generic $70 dash cam. It's the newer model (for better or worse). Installation was a breeze with power magic. And it came with extra sticky pads in case you screw up the first time.
My only complain so far is that it gets really hot to touch.
That and my "spirited" driving keeps triggering the "Event". Will try adjusting sensitivity, even though it's already 80 out of a 100 in normal mode, I think.
One more thing - to connect more than one camera to the account, you need to buy additional slots for $10/ea. Not a big deal but still. Or you can create a separate account but not as convenient - will need to log out and log in. Cannot receive notifications from both at the same time.

PaulMDSame issue. I would like option of adding in Power Magic Pro to my order OR there is a newer fancier option from BlackVue that has a built-in battery for the camera called "Blackvue Power Magic Battery Pack B-100 ". This has same features as the Power Magic Pro plus a battery which allows the camera to record for hours even after the car is turned off without draining the car battery at all.

I'm part of the most recent drop that was expected to ship today. Is there any kind of update on if it's shipping on time?
I'm moving soon and if it's going to be delayed like the others then I may need to change where it's sent to.

HK-47It's now 4 days after the estimated shipping date and I've received no updates either here or in my email.
Per the last drop update email I received "The current estimated shipping date is 6/14.
We will update the group via email if the expected ship date is moved."
Could we get some kind of official acknowledgement that something has gone wrong at least?
This drop cost a pretty significant chunk of change and I'd like some kind of update.
At this point I've signed up for (and paid for) a drop and been given an estimated shipping date and a promise for updates should something change with that date. That date has come and gone and I've received neither a tracking number nor an update.
I understand that things can go wrong with shipping or with the manufacturer but without receiving any kind of updates I don't know if either of those things have happened. At this point I have to start considering contacting my credit card company if Massdrop is not willing to communicate.

Just so everyone is aware, Massdrop won't disclose the identity of their vendor/distributor. Buyers should know this up-front.
This is important because if you have a problem with your Blackvue, and contact Pittasoft, they may refer you back to the distributor for repair/replacement/etc. That's a real problem when Massdrop won't tell you who that distributor is.
I'm in that boat right now. I'm trying to get an out-of-warranty repair done on a Blackvue DR650GW-2CH camera (I've purchased two, through two different drops), and have run headlong into this issue. Pittasoft has tried to refer me to a different distributor, but I don't know yet if they're going to be able/willing to assist.
Just FYI
