Having previously posted in these discussions and been asked about the BLON B8 compared to the Sivga SV006, I acquired a new (revised model) B8 and can confirm: The B8 is identical to the SV006 - just unbranded. The original B8's headband-too-large issue has been corrected with this updated model, which also has a narrower sound-stage compared to the original model. The only catch is, the uncomfortable and sound-hindering stock pads absolutely must be replaced. After experimenting with over a dozen pad models, I recommend the Brainwavz Angled PU Leather Pads, which result in a large soundstage and overall balanced sound. Although they lack in the aspect of ventilation, these synthetic 'pleather' pads don't sound bloated or dark, as with real leather pads . Honorable mentions:
  • The 'dark grey velour' pads from a brand called misodiko (Amazon item B07QWZYTGF). These pads provide a good center-image - excellent with vocal tracks - but somewhat tame the bass response.

  • Brainwavz' Micro Suede Pads breathe result in a rather dry sound, with a smaller sound-stage... but everything about the sound is under control and precise.
The best pads for the original 'too-large-of-a-headband' B8 are the 'Velvet' pads from a brand called LTYIVABHTTW (Amazon item B07FN78WBS). They keep the bass and treble in check, but the real benefit is sound-stage magic! (I've never heard such a specious sound from a closed-back headphone. And these pads also sound great with the currently-sold B8.) I'll go out on a limb and say that the BLON B8 is among the best general-purpose, wired, closed-back headphones under $500 - as long as you pad-swap.

mattrisI was just looking up the differences between the B8 and the Sivga SV006, and I read a lot to what you had to say on your previous posts/discussions about the B8 in the past. So as you mentioned both of these headphones are identical; that clears up a lot for me because currently the SV006 costs more than the B8, meaning I'll be going for the B8. My question is regarding pads. I personally prefer to have more Bass in my headphones, but judging from your previous comments you say that the Brainwavz Oval Sheep Skin Pads make the B8 sound dark compared to the Brainwavz Oval Micro Suede Pads. Will I be losing/missing out on 'a lot' if I go for the Sheep Skin's instead of the Micro Suede? Because I also don't want to be losing much of the other stuff offered by the Micro Suede's by going with the Sheep Skin's. (If that makes sense) And another thing I'd like to know, is there a benefit with going for Angled pad as to normal Non-Angled pads? Because if it adds more sound stage then I'm all for that, if not I'd probably still go with Angled pads because I "think" it would add more comfort in my case. EDIT : This ^ question is meant for ALL headphones and not just the B8. Thank you to your massive help in your discussions, I would really appreciate your input.

rowaihi.11Hi. Happy to help. You're in luck... I actually have a pair of Brainwavz Oval Angled Sheep Skin Pads. On my stock B8, they noticeably accentuate the mid- and upper-bass. The sound is a bloated and unnatural with orchestral/instrumental music, but with pop music genres, that bit of extra heft is welcome. Since the B8 is a bright headphone, the treble quantity is plenty strong, but the sound is very 'closed' its presentation, without any sense of 'space'. The Brainwavz Oval Micro Suede Pads yield more detail, treble, and comfort (breathe-ability and softness) ... and less - but tighter - bass. A very lean, dry presentation. Compared to the Micro Suedes, the super soft dark grey velour misodiko pads (with perforated fake leather on the inside) have slightly less treble and offer a 'lusher' sound: more bass, sound-stage, and better center-imaging. Since you value bass, I recommend the black velour misodiko pads, which are a fuzzy suede material. The pair I bought from Amazon also have perforated fake leather on their inside, but the photos shown are all suede. Either way will be fine, as bass-boosting, treble-reducing, and comfort are their strengths. Both of the misodiko pads are selectable as Amazon item B07QV33SJG. And yes, angled pads offer a large sound stage and more-stable fit than flat pads. But being thicker causes increased around-the-ear pressure. Also, angled pads bring your ears away from the driver, which decreases mid-frequency response. Just so you know, I was getting my sound impressions while using the portable FiiO Q1 mkII, which is quite affordable and a pleasure to use. What's your current DAC/amp, if I may ask?

mattrisWOW thanks for the detailed info. Looks like I'll be getting both the Brainwavz Oval Angled Sheep Skin Pads and the Misodiko Black Velour Pads just to switch it up and have more options. (but it might be hard to get the Misodiko because Amazon my not ship to where I live) Regarding the angled pads, I figured that they would provide more sound stage but didn't really think that, that would be at the expense of some 'mids'. But regarding them being more comfortable is what really matters to me personally. I currently have a Syba Sonic DAC/amp that I use with my Sivga SV004 with Sheep Skin Angled Pads that I bought from Aliexpress. And I also have the EarStudio ES-100 (there is a newer model called the MkII) with my IEMs when I go portable. But I've been thinking of upgrading my Syba Sonic to an iFi Zen DAC. The Syba Sonic is good for it's price and for what it offers IMO but I know I'll be getting more if I go for the Zen DAC. Do you use your FiiO Q1 MkII portable or only at home? I've read that its really good and powerful, but meant for portable use.

rowaihi.11As I mentioned, angled pads offer more stability than flat pads, but their increased thickness can cause around-the-ear pressure as the headband exerts more clamp. With the B8, the remedy is simply bending the headband to your desired clamping level. And yes, the 'decreased mids' effect is real with deeper earpads. Since my iPhone SE has a headphone jack, I primarily use my FiiO Q1 mkII at home as my daily workhorse DAC/amp. I don't mind that it doesn't have reference-level sound, as I also have an SMSL T1 hybrid tube amp/DAC that sounds significantly better, especially after I swapped-out its stock tube. I have my eye out for a reference-level amplifier or DAC/amp combo, but most models are either lacking features... or are expensive. The iFi Zen DAC would offer improved sound, but I don't like that its only 'output' is headphone (balanced/SE), and its only 'input' is USB. But if portability and (relatively) low price is important to you, it should be near the top of your list. Would you consider increasing your budget to get even better sound?

mattrisWell to me the iFi Zen DAC would be great because it would be the only source that I connect my headphones to, and it would be connected via USB to my computer. Plus I would have the option to also connect powered monitors or passive speaker to it in the future if I wanted to. But I'm assuming that you mean having two headphones plugged into it at the same time, then I don't think that is possible, but I could be wrong. To me what it has to offer is really good compared to it's price. Regarding reference-level amps I'm sorry but I don't have a full understanding about them, as I am pretty new to the audiophile world. I haven't thought of getting an Amp/DAC like the FiiO Q1 MKII because I prefer something that is more meant for being a desktop source, and also if I wanted to go portable I have the ES-100 as I mentioned before. Currently I have my eyes set on the Zen DAC because I feel it would be great for my needs. But in regards to increasing my budget to get better sound, that will hopefully be in the future. But portability isn't really a big requirement to me because I currently only use IEMs when going portable, plus I'm also thinking of getting the FiiO BTR5 as an 'upgrade' to my portable set up. I've looked up the SMSL T1 and it looks to be a great tube DAC/Amp. But I personally haven't dabbled into the tube world as of yet. But I will try a tube Amp whenever I have the opportunity to do so.

rowaihi.11I must apologize... I misread and was thinking of the portable iFi Hip DAC, which is a similar device to the FiiO Q1 mkII. You are correct: the iFi Zen DAC is a proper DAC to also connect powered monitors or - with a speaker amplifier - passive speakers. For its price, I'd say it's one of the best-value audio products in the world right now. From what I understand, it has a slightly warm and dark presentation, with smoothed highs. Its strength is non-fatiguing listening... and the TrueBass button. Reference-level amps are extremely linear in their sound presentation, generally with plenty of detail retrieval and power. Examples of these would be the Massdrop THX AAA 789 and Geshelli Labs ArchelPro 2.5. As for reference level DACs, the Mytek Liberty DAC is one of the best under $1000... and it also has a superb headphone amplifier built-in. Yes, the FiiO BTR5 would be an upgrade over what you have, but you might consider a more premium device, such as a dedicated digital audio player (DAP). As for tube amps... Swapping out the tubes is relatively easy, but choosing the right tubes (matching with your headphone sound, pairing, etc.) and power supplies to get the best sound can be confusing and difficult. There's no shame in staying with solid-state for now!

mattrisNo need to apologize. And I agree with what you had to say about the iFi Zen DAC. Thank you for providing a brief explanation about Reference-level Amps. The THX AAA 789 is on my bucket list of things to get when upgrading. I've also seen a lot of reviews about the SMSL SP-200 Amplifier which is a competitor to the 789 that also has the 'better' 888 THX chip in it and is also cheaper. I say 'better' because from all the reviews I've seen no one can Hear the difference between them, but in regards to measurements there is a difference between both chips and the 888 is better than the 789 when it comes to numbers. I am leaning more towards the 789 because it has 3 gain levels while the SP-200 has 2 and judging from what I've seen from reviews, the low gain in the SP-200 isn't low enough. In regards to DAPs I was never interested in them. Yes - they do provide more power and better sound overall. But I prefer to have everything on my phone. The argument can be made that I could do the same with DAPs as I would do with the BTR5 that I could connect to them via Bluetooth but then that would be the same thing. As for tube amps I thought about getting the Xduoo TA-01 that was recently offered here on Drop as an introduction to tubes. But I decided on delaying that till I get better equipment first to then have a better understanding/appreciation to tubes and how they change the sound. And yes soild-state is better for now.

rowaihi.11Your research serves you well! While the SMSL SP-200 is smaller and less expensive, I would say that the THX AAA 789 sounds just as good - if not better - in real-world use. Plus, its aesthetics (looks, knobs, etc.) are vastly superior, and the 3 gain levels are a huge benefit with less-sensitive headphones or IEMs, allowing more 'play' in the volume control. If I get a DAP, it will be one that can be used as a USB sound card with my computer... and have a coaxial/optical digital-out to connect to my speaker system. But my phone will do for now, too. After enjoying my SMSL T1, I almost got the Xduoo TA-01B for its power output, but I've decided that my next headphone-related purchase will be solid-state: a powerful amplifier... or an all-in-one, end-game DAC/amp. I own a dozen headphones, so it would be a worthwhile investment!

If I had to choose, I'd go with the 789 over the SP-200 because I would be using it for many years, and the additional gain level and better overall feel would absolutely be worth it to me. Regarding a DAP, it would be nice to listen to music without having to sit at a desk at my computer... or carry around a phone, laptop, or tablet connected to a DAC/amp. But if I do get a great solid-state DAC, amp, or all-in-one soon, it might be some time before I purchase a DAP... but we'll see. Yeah, the AudioValve Solaris is overkill, indeed. I'm sure it's a pleasure to use... until something breaks on it. And something tells me it's one of those 'jack of all trades... master of none' products. At $6000, I won't need to worry because I'll never own it!

mattrisI too would probably go with the 789 for the same reasons you mentioned. But - specs aside - I'd prefer the 789 because it would look cleaner on a desk and it also has more connections. You bring up a good point for DAPs. But I currently have my eyes set on getting equipment for the setup I am saving up to build, and DAPs haven't really been a thing that I would consider, but who know what happens in the future. I'm sure you'll be satisfied with the DAP you choose to buy - whenever that may be. We pretty much share the same idea of the AudioValve Solaris. And I personally don't think that I would ever reach the point where I'd spend anywhere close to that price on a 'single' audio device.

rowaihi.11Final thoughts for now: I would recommend the CENTRANCE DACPORT HD as a great DAC/amp for use at a computer... although I must admit, I haven't heard it. I don't recommend the Brainwavz leather pads for use with the B8, as they are overly expensive for the sound and comfort they provide. However, you could try one of Brainwavz newest model pads: GEL GAMING (OVAL, MICRO SUEDE), which are supposed to 'breathe' better than their MicroSuede. (But I know those misodiko pads would be ideal for you.) Nice chatting with you. All the best!

mattrisHi Mattris, i think i have read all the comments you have made in the B8 discussion and there is a wealth of information in there. Thank you! I have had my B8 stock for about a week now and generaly live in headphones all the time, so they should be burnt in now. I have to say these are close to becoming my favorite headphones and i was hoping you might be able to give some advice on how i might be able obtain the characters i am after. From reading your comments i think i need the Micro suede and the bass tightening mod. For me the bass is plenty, but it is a bit muddy. There is low end detail getting mushed with mids, it does not sound bad but i was wondering if these mods fixed that issue. I love the trebble with these, it is very smooth. I can use these for long periods with no fatigue. It does miss some sparkle but i have other hp's for that. The mids just sound right to me, everything sounds like it has the correct amount. I was wondering if it also possible to get more soundstage out of these? i know that might be asking for too much as these are closed back. I think there is somthing very special about these hp's and i think they deserve some serious attention. I am considering buying a second pair so i can compare un-modded vs modded as i make changes. I am running them off a gustard h10 amp (plenty of juice) and a liquid saffire 56 as dac. I use a shenzen up4 as amp with my phone when i am at work. These are the hp's i have for comparison, Hifiman He560 and he400, AKG k702, Sennheiser 58x, Fostex t20rp with mayflower mod, Audioquest Nighthawks and my bed time pair sennheiser rs180. Thank you for all the explanations in the discussions. I relised i can already try some pad swapping with headphones i already have. This is what i have discovered so far, the stock pads are poo poo! Muddy mess I have a set of shure 1540 pads that fit loosely and a set of pleather angled pads. The sure pads clean up the mess , overall the whole fr is more defined. Especially the low mids to the low end. It is very strange how the details are all poking out now. The angled pads need a bit of volume boost, but still sound much better than the stock pads. The angled pads spread everything out and makes them sound like open backs. On certain tracks its sounds very spacious with lots of detail in the highs, it is very enjoyable on certain tracks. But on some tracks the mids are missing and there is a hollow sound to it. Maybe angled pads are a bad choice as the speakers are already angled inside the cups. I have to get a few different pads and start experimenting, should i get all the ones you have tried or do you have a select few that you would recommend? Have you tried the gel ones?

ToadinthemoleHi Toadinthemole, Happy to help. The BLON/BossHifi B8 is a very special headphone, indeed. Look (listen?) forward to marveling at its sound once you swap-out their cruddy stock pads. If you bought the headphones recently, you probably have the new version which, I believe, is identical to the Sivga SV006, apart from a lack of Sivga branding on the metal part of headband. (The older version of the B8 had a longer headband and wider sound-stage. I have that version, too.) Just for you, I did some more pad-swapping experimentation. I concluded that if you don't mind accurate/present treble and value soundstage, then the Brainwavz Angled Protein Leather Pads (pleather/PU) would be ideal for you. Brainwavz' standard MicroSuede pads sound alright with the B8, but this combo lacks any 'special factor'. However, you could try their MicroSuede GEL GAMING Pads (oval) pads which, with a layer of less-dense memory foam, likely have better soundstage and 'breathe' better than the standard MicroSuede pads... and any pleather pads. All of the pads mentioned here drastically clean-up the bass compared to using the stock pads. (Any mud you were hearing will be removed, but the standard MicroSuede pads do result in a bit of a warm tilt.) Yes, get a second pair... and install different pads so that you won't have to pad-swap, depending on your mood or music. (Trust me though, you'll never again want to hear them with their stock pads.) Oh, and don't worry about the my aforementioned 'bass tightening mod'. I realized that it just constricts the overall sound. Let me know if you have any questions. All the best.

mattrisHi Mattris, thanks for getting back to me and trying the angled pads for me. I have ordered the Brainwavz PU angled pads, the Gel micro suede pads and angle hybrid pads. I will update on how they turn out once they arrive. So far i am still loving these b8's with the shure 1540 pads i have put on, the sound is so much clearer and balanced with these pads. Also thanks for telling me not to do the bass tightening mod, the bass is already tight and punchy with the shure 1540 pads. Many thanks

spookoHi spooko. I updated my original post, so you can check it out. The general rule for getting more treble and a larger sound-stage is to use pads that have porous inner and outer surfaces, which reduce reflections and let the lower frequencies 'escape', resulting in the treble being relatively prominent. These kinds of pads also result in a more vast sound-stage, as the sound coming from the drivers is 'more free'. Also, pads that have a larger ear openings will increase a headphone's sound-stage, with more of the original (direct) sound hitting your ears. With a bigger interior space to fill around your ears, large-opening pads generally decrease bass and increase treble, as less of the treble is absorbed by the interior walls of the pads, which are further away from the driver. Hope this helps! Read through this thread, and let me know if you'd like me to give you some other specific earpad recommendations.

spookoThe Brainwavz MicroSuede GEL GAMING Pads? I haven't heard them, but I'd bet they'll sound great... but probably won't offer the biggestest sound-stage. They won't come with pre-attached plastic or double-sided tape - just a stretchy back lip... that you'll have to stretch around the plastic frame that's attached to each of the cups of the B8... after you remove the stock pads, of course. The whole process is relatively simple but can be frustrating, so be patient. If you want to see a demonstration, I'm sure there are Youtube videos. Let me know how it goes... and how they sound when you've made the swap.

spookoNah, I wouldn't get pads made for the CD900ST, which have small openings that would significantly reduce the sound-stage. If you buy directly from BrainwavzAudio.com, you can take advantage of a 30% off sale they're running on most of their pads... and free shipping on orders $50 and over. I recommend these ones: PERFORATED protein leather (increased treble and soundstage, reduced bass) Micro Suede w/ Gel layer (overall solidity, controlled treble) Hybrid (a mix of materials and sonic attributes. These can sound great but are 'less predictable' than the other two models... if that makes any sense.) Each of these would offer a different sound signature, as well as varying levels of 'breathability'. If you got all three, you could change the pads to suit your mood, the ambient temperature, and the music you're playing. (And when you undoubtedly get more headphones, the pads could be used with them!)

xxxbudCompared to the new revision, my older Blon B8 has a longer headband and slightly wider soundstage. I will say, the new one sounds absolutely superb with Brainwavz Micro Suede Earpads. For general listening, this 'combo' is the best I've heard from a lower-cost, closed-back headphone... by a mile. The reviewer obviously listened to the headphones with their stock pads, which are garbage for sound and comfort and do the headphones an injustice. Compared to my newer B8, the Sivga SV006 has more bass and upper-mids... and is more picky with pad-swaps. I much prefer the neutral sound of the B8.
