For this drop, we’ve partnered with Spyderco to offer an exclusive selection of the company's best-selling Native 5 models, as well as a few extras. By joining, you’ll at least receive a classic plain-edge Spyderco Native 5 with a lightweight FRN handle and an S110V blade Read More
Got the standard FRN plus a Sharpmaker - pleasantly surprised. The Native is a nice solid piece - but super stiff to open. Is that the same for you guys as well? I'm hoping that as I play with it more, it'll loosen up a bit. Can't flick it open like an axis lock...
8Zero8If it's still stiff try putting a high-viscosity grease (I actually just used coconut oil but there's certainly better options) on the rounded back of the blade where it rubs up against the lock. There'll be quite a bit of black residue where the metal has worn down as you break it in; I cleaned it off with a q-tip a few times and greased it again. Flicks like a champ now, although as a few others have noted it is a bit small in the hand. I like the ergonomics with the finger choil, just not when it's closed.
I got the standard FRN, but also got the Dragonfly Hawkbill Salt. Could have been better, but I'm not disappointed. Still well worth the cost and gamble!
MotorcityschmidtyI also got "only" the Maxamet version (no pouch), and I'm thrilled with that. Would have been equally happy with the the G10 or S90V versions, but definitely happy with what I got. (Frankly, I'd have been fine with the S110V FRN version, too.)
Agreed on the ergonomics. Feels like the choil is necessary and not an option. I'm interested in getting some time in with the steel though, so I'd bet right now that my hoarding tendencies are going to win out. Thinking I might remove the clip and go old-school bottom of the pocket carry.
MinistrOfJustizYes, I know Spyderco includes the unsharpened part of the blade as part of the blade length but did not properly imagine just how small this was going to be overall. I should have stuck to my general rule to stay with knives with blades of 3.5" or more.
I was charged $130 after the drop ended. If you get an upgrade, is that charged later when it ships, or does this mean I got the base knife (which is nice knife, don't get me wrong)? I haven't done one of these blue box deals before.
