This turned out to be an awful deal. I got charge 2 dollar duty and then another 10 dollar in extra fees. I would of paid less if I had gotten this from Amazon. I was thinking of getting a Hifiman Edition X or a Focal Elex but instead I'm never going to buy anything from Massdrop ever again. So sick of these hidden fees

Random_GuyI had to pay CDN$16 COD: $6 for duties+tax, & $10 to DHL to act as a customs broker. This is on top of the delivery fee charged at the time of purchase. The duties+tax was expected, as should be anything over US$20 shipping into Canada. But the $10 DHL brokerage fee is a set price for handling DHL shipments into Canada, and as a known cost charged by DHL should have been included in the delivery fee at the time of purchase. I did not know Massdrop was using DHL for this delivery, so I couldn't even assume that there was this additional $10 charge. In my experience, Massdrop seems more likely to ship via DHL in the month or two leading up to Christmas (probably because DHL cross border shipping is really fast, in time for the holidays). For smaller purchases, I would just avoid purchases from Massdrop in those months; for more expensive items, the extra fees just seem negligible relative to the price. BTW, the new USMCA trade agreement, once/if ratified, will raise the Canadian thresholds for duty & tax as follows (https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/de-minimis-duty-free-1.4845458). I might just hold off on cross border shopping until then.
  • old limit for duty AND tax: $20
  • new limit for duties: $150
  • new limit for taxes: $40
