If you looked up “hefty” in the dictionary, you might see a picture of the Albatross, a Jens Anso–designed knife produced in collaboration with Boker and CountyComm. The knife boasts a massive 3.6-millimeter-thick titanium plate that forms the basis of the frame lock Read More
Hefty build, quality components, a real connoisseur's knife
To start, I am not an expert on knives and I do not have 100 other knives in the same price range to compare this to. But I do know a great piece of EDC gear when I see it.
Fit and Finish: This knife just oozes quality. The stonewash finish on the blade blends seamlessly with the stonewash titanium grip panel on the locking side. Flip the knife around and the marbled carbon fiber contrasts the blade beautifully. This knife is very fun to hold, pop open, and just look at.
Ergonomics and Carry: I have opted to carry this knife without the clip. It sits at the bottom of my right pant pocket. The lanyard loop assists in retrieving it. I wear a L-XL glove, and in the hand I am able to get 3 fingers on the frame, with the pinky sitting in the space between the grip and the lanyard ball. Both sides of the grip are very smooth, and the serrations on the spine allow some extra control to press the blade forward.
Usage: This blade came sharp enough for me from the factory. It has stayed sharp in my few months of daily, albeit light, use. I find this knife easy to deploy with the flick of a thumb, so long as I use the flat of my nail rather than the tip or pad of the thumb. The blade style is unique, and there do seem to be some use cases where I might prefer a more acute point rather than the rounded belly. I have also shied away from using this blade for prying or other torquing tasks, mostly because I would hate to mar or damage such a beautiful knife. The fact that this knife is designed (and priced) for desk jockeys rather than bushcrafters should be obvious. When it comes to mundane tasks like opening boxes or cutting cigars, this knife will do everything you need.
In summary, I would say this is a compact but beefy EDC knife that pleases the senses and cuts like a razor.
I have carried the knife for a few weeks now. It is a very stout, well built knife. Carbon fiber does reduce the weight and adds nice eye appeal. I saw a reviewer mention the blade rusting after a day’s use. I have not experienced this. I found the blade easy to open and close. But, for those wishing to adjust the blade action, my knife came with a torx tool which can be used to loosen or tighten the blade action at the pivot screw. I am quite pleased with this knife.
I love it! Bold, tough, beefy. The lanyard is a nice touch.
Only complaint is that it's hard to open. Hoping that will ease up in time. Edit: it has. 11/20/19
Love the scale/titanium scale.
I would like to start this review off saying that I love the look of this night, it is so unique. Unfortunately after only a day of light use the blade began to rust.
Apollo_JusticeYeah that's pretty strange since VG-10 is supposed to be cutlery grade stainless steel, which would suggest you'd need to expose it to really poor conditions in order to get it to rust. Even after jumping in a pool in a cave my Benchmade in 154CM only developed slight surface rust under the scales, but the blade showed no signs of rust which is what you should expect from a stainless steel. More details about what conditions you're using the knife in?
Not the most practical design, but if you're considering this knife, you probably already know that. It's a very cool and standout design. As others have said, the size and location of the thumb studs make opening a little awkward, and the blade is thicker than I prefer on an EDC, but its a great "big little" knife with a solid build and good fit and finish.
I have to admit, I love the Boker Panchenko, and the Voxnaes F3. I love these short fat knives.
But this one tops them all.
beautiful stonewashed VG10, supersharp, perfect centering, no play, smooth action, gorgeous ornamentation with the anodized titanium.
the shredded carbon fiber suits this beautifully.
just an excellent piece, and a real bargain at $99. Would not be unreasonable at $150.
love it
