Why can't I just order the damned knife I want, and get that knife? I don't want random bullsh*t when dropping $125 on a knife.
That dual grind makes the knife less useful, by the way, interrupting your ability to slice halfway through the blade's length. It is a chance to get something stupid and useless. It's absolutely not an upgrade.
This went from something I was considering ordering to something I will under no circumstances order.
bobtheaxolotlDamn man! I thought I was the only one who thought that. I’m not ordering because with my stupid luck I’ll end up with that stupid gimmicky duplex grind.
so now massdropped is a para mutual wagering company? ill stick with a for sure thing.. not some hyped buy this at retail and you might get something more. yeah... this is a bust
JimBofMaineYes, seems a bit pricey considering that the wooden mirror exclusive was offered here for $99.99. Although that was two years ago and the knife prices here and elsewhere have gone up across the board.
Miss the days when you could get a titanium Kizer on Massdrop for $79.
SCORE-SCORE-SCORE!!!!!! Actually scored one of the Damascus blade versions!!!!!!!!!! Its Christmas in November! This is a big, beast of a knife, much larger than expected...….but when I saw that Damascus - WOWZER!! Gorgeous!
Is there anyone else who makes kwaikens? I got in on that massdrop wooden scale boker kwaiken and man was the quality meh. Most of the bokers I’ve owned were very meh especially for this price point. Price point wise I could just be spoiled by those MDxFF knives where you’re getting way better finish quality and materials for this price.
Also since im griping, I think the kwaiken is a tad too big for a gentleman folder. The mini kwaiken is a tad too small. Why can’t they stick To the gold standard 3 and 4 ratio? Also it’s so thick too, just unnecessary.
DocZZZYes. And sort of. That I know of, anyway.
"Sort of": Boker contracted with Pro-tech to make a auto version of the kwaiken. It's got the Boker nameplate, of course, because it's their design, but the build was all done by Pro-Tech, and it's as excellent as any other PT auto I've ever seen (which is a lot, I've got a thing for PTs). So if you're in a locale that permits an auto with a 3.5" blade and >8" overall, get one get one get one...wait, what am I saying? Get four like I did.
"Yes": Todd Begg's "Steelcraft" production line makes one. It's quite differently styled, but its still called a kwaiken. That one I don't own because I have a hard time justifying $400 for a production flipper. I'm sure it's nice, very nice, but for that price I could buy two of the aforementioned kwaiken autos, and they're better looking anyway. And autos.
My advice: go to BladeHq and get one of their micarta and brass exclusive kwaikens. They have a great build quality that I wish all Bokers did. The copper and carbon ones at BHQ look cooler online, but the micartas seem to be better built. And if you want to be 100% sure, order by phone and ask the person who answers to check out the actual knife they will be sending (best to call on Monday for that, as their storefront is closed and the employees have a bit more time).
ponagathosI have both the copper/carbon, and the micarta/brass kwaikens; the latter comes in full and mini kwaiken sizes, and I own both of those. And I have to say, I Iike the micarta/brass design better. Not only is the blade deployment superior on the micarta/brass versions (which seems to be a generally shared experience among the people I've spoken to who own both varieties), the micarta scales, brass bolsters, and lightly stonewashed blade look better too. The pics online are deceiving, I dont know exactly why, but I totally understand why you would want the copper/carbon variety because while waiting for them to be released, I fully expected to like the copper bolsters and carbon fiber scales much better. Hell, copper and marbled carbon are two of my favorite build materials. But seen in-person, the micarta and brass look amazing together in a way the copper bolsters and marbled carbon scales somehow don't as much, esp in conjunction with the respective blades.
Just my two cents.
HatuletohThanks for the input. Not that I do not like the brass, just given the choice, I would normally pick copper over it. Always liked the look better. Yours is not the first comment on the copper having less than stellar deployment either.
I may just never get past the thinking about it stage. I have spent way too much on knives this year and do I really need another kwaiken? Sometimes the window shopping is nearly as fun as the knife in hand.
