The Boker Plus .50 Caliber Tactical Pen combines the mechanism behind a rifle with the portability of an everyday writing utensil—it also happens to be the same width as a .50 caliber bullet. To open and close the pen, use the bolt-action mechanism to firmly secure the tip in place Read More

Just got mine (carbon fiber version) today and I'm disappointed.
First, the rolling pin is not smooth to operate. Maybe it needs some break-in time so only time can tell if it will be better.
Second, the QA is really really bad. I can still see glue or whatever sticky thing here and there on the pen.. Yes.. i can clean it out myself but... even $1 pen won't have this problem. The major issue is.. the carbon fiber barrel has some small chips and cracks closed to the end of the barrel. The cutting edge is not straight and you can see gaps between both end caps and the barrel . Looks like to me they're using a handheld saw to cut the barrels.. And.. the worst is this is not something i can fix myself. :(
The pen is in good size and the clip looks solid.
Is it anything that Massdrop can help?
Yeah.. I did talk to Customer Service... I actually want an exchange (I want to own this Boker Plus in Carbon Fiber for awhile) but the CS told me that MassDrop just place enough quantity of those people ordered. There's no extra that can be used as exchange. They do offer a refund or have a small discount (couple dollars). I took the discount and count myself just bad luck. I do ask the CS to talk to the manufacturer to make sure they have to step up their QA game.
Joined for the carbon fiber- already had a micarta, solid pen and great size. I did have to polish the mechanism , the screws aren’t flush with the barrel and may catch.
You know, there's nothing actually tactical about this pen right? Boker just puts that word in the description so individuals of a certain "mindset" (and you know who you are) are more inclined to buy it, than say...any other pen of equal value and functionality. Like this one for instance:

They both do the same thing after all. And buzzword descriptions like "bolt-action" and ".50 Cal" actually don't mean anything when you put the pen to paper. Most pens have some way of retracting the ballpoint. And truth be told, when John Browning conceived the fifty caliber round in the early 1900s, he wasn't all that concerned with how well its dimensions might translate to a novelty pen a hundred years into the future.
And frankly, when one considers Browning's appreciation for engineering and design, I can pretty much say with confidence, John Moses Browning would much rather have owned a nice Hello Kitty ballpoint pen, than any damn Boker Plus .50 Cal CID Tactical Bolt Pen--I'm absolutely positive of that!
RayFRayF,
Do you know that the goal of a tactical pen is to have a self defense tool on-hand? Especially when you can't carry anything that is classified as a weapon; i.e. knife or pepper spray. They are completely legal to carry into secure facilities, on planes, etc.
I purchased one of these during a previous drop and have found it to be a great value. For writing it contains a Fisher Space Pen refill. Some might argue that point alone makes it better than your Hello Kitty pen.
On the tactical side: This pen, I have the micarta handle version, is light weight very durable and slightly shorter than a standard plastic pen. This makes it a great length to hold in a fist, wrap a thumb around the end and drive into an attacker. The shape of the micarta handle also provides excellent grip for the palm and fingers. I regularly carry this pen when I travel with my wife and children. Maybe you can protect your loved ones with your Hello Kitty pen but I prefer tool that I can count on.
RustyTinmanWell Mr. Tinman, I should like to bring to your attention the golden rule of defensive weapons, which states: any weapon you bring to a fight (offensive or defensive, actually) the other fellow, can in theory, take away from you and then use that weapon against you. That's why Correctional Officers and Flight Attendants rarely, carry weapons. So, with that in mind, I'd much rather square off with a fellow who's just snatched my Hello Kitty pen, than your Boker Plus .50 Cal CID Tactical Bolt Pen!
I really dislike it when the item pictured is not the price that's advertised. It feels like the old bait and switch and imo is very distasteful and unprofessional. Massdrop your better then this.

I tagged you two because you seem like honest people and I don't know who to contact about this. Thanks.
Gunnersmate2Thanks for bringing this to our attention @Gunnersmate2. The Carbon Fiber model was the only option available on the last run, and it looks like we forgot to change the main image back to Micarta. We will work on getting this corrected ASAP!
I just replaced my cartridge with a Schneider Slider 755 viscoglde ink refill XB size. I really like this cartridge! From Office Depot. Bold and smooth feel. I also got a Fisher space pen refill as I have the MD version of that as well, but I prefer this 755 cartridge. I do like bold pens though...
I have both the aluminum and micarta, excellent solid pieces. I'm using Fisher Space Pen refills. The small screws on the clip and the top of the bolt might need a bit of threadlock to be sure they don't go anywhere in time.
I went ahead and joined this Drop for the carbon fiber version. I want to cancel my order on the previous Drop but couldn't figure out how to cancel my order.
