Picked up the carbon fiber version on one of the previous drops and am quite pleased with it.
I was looking for a quality every day carry pen, particularly one that was not overlong and had a strong stable clip. I pocket carry a pen every day and have been searching for a sub $50 option that fit my criteria for a while, I'm happy to say the Boker .50 Cal delivers.
The barrel width makes for a comfortable grip and the length is not a problem for me. I wear a Large size glove, if that gives you some basis for comparison. The carbon fiber has a glossy laminate layer above the cf, I was worried this would scratch against the other items I carry clipped in-pocket but so far I have only seen some mild abrasion and the laminate continues to provide a smooth grip and a classy look overall. The bolt action is quick and reliable and can be easily opened and closed one-handed. The clip is the real star for me: held in place by double torx screws it has a decent amount of spring and is strong enough that there is little fear of it bending loose or breaking off.
It compares and performs well against many of the more expensive EDC-style pens I have had experience with. Price, durability and the strong clip are leading factors in recommending it. The fit and finish are good, I've occasionally had concerns with Boker knives in this area but this pen feels dialed-in.
I'm not a huge fan of the Fisher Space Pen refill and will be swapping in a Schmidt Easy Flow soon, but I have no real complaint about how the refill deploys and its ease of use in this pen.
I picked up the Micarta version this round and am looking forward to seeing the texture and molded grip first-hand.
GentlemanSinHow is that Schmidt Easy Flow refill working out? I really want this pen, but I HATE the Fisher Space pen refills.
FourfingeredjakeStill haven't ordered the Schmidt, the Fisher has been getting me by though last night it was so difficult writing on a piece of vellum that I thought I was going to lose my damn mind.
More incentive to get that Schmidt in there, I will report back.
