The meter does not need to be anything fancy. The only requirements are that it is rated for maybe 400VDC and that you can measure both voltage and resistance with it. A continuity beeper is nice, but not mandatory. A Digital MultiMeter (DMM) for just a few bucks from ebay will be fine. I'm even seeing some for under $5 that look like they would do the job. Given the choice, put more money into the soldering iron and less into the meter.<br /><br />If you want to get fancy, Fluke makes some very nice DMMs.
