The price keeps climbing on their own website due to the cost of parts for the kit rising. The transformer wrapper needs a cost of living increase or whatever. These amps were down in the 2xx dollar range way back when I was dragging my feet saying, "Someday..." That aside, does THIS KIT have instructions to build the speedball version straight away or do you have to build yourself a base model Crack and then unsolder stuff and modify the wiring to facilitate the speedball upgrade? I'd really like if I could built it completely right off of the bat without having to remove parts. The Bottlehead Crack (non speedball) that I have right now sounds great.
I do not think the price is climbing up since September 2012. InnerFidelity reviewed it back in September 2012, and Crack was already $279 back then and remained the same. According to reports (Cnet and Hi-Fi.org) mention that it was 213-219 back in March 2011 and June 2012. People bought for 300 (combo) back in 2013, when the unit alone was 279. You have Crack already, so if you want you can wait for BF sale- last year it was 15% off.
So this sounds great with the 990 Pro's? I love these headphones already with just a Magni amp. Also, what turntable is that?
I personally like the DT990, DT880, and DT770.. Mine are 250 ohm models. I have the Sennheiser HD650 as well, but never use them because they fit goofy and sound bland compared to the Beyerdynamics. My turntable is just a Pro-Ject Debut III that I modified with an Ortofon 2m red cartridge and a acrylic platter. It sounds so-so but most of the records I collect are old, beat up Exotica and Surf stuff. I should mention I'm half deaf from listening to car stereos, riding motorcycles with no earplugs and shooting guns with no ear plugs. I can't hear above 14khz.
