I know that it is silly to compare closed backs with open ones but still. I can't decide whether to get shp9500 or this pair( they are at exactly same price for me) or any other pair of cans at similar price points. Any ideas, advices observations are welcome.

AudiovirginI dont have these headphones, but Im currently listening to my SPH9500s' and they are my favorite and most comfortable set of headphones (I have about 12 sets). They dont have very punchy base, but its tight and you can tell its there, I just wouldn't recommend them for metal fans. They are incredible for the money.

AudiovirginIf sound leakage doesn't matter, get the SHP9500. It comes down to personal preference, but for me the 9500 blows the HM5 away in every measure sound-wise. Plus it is far more comfortable to wear - the HM5 has a strong clamp, a poorly padded headband. LAstly, the HM5 is prone to yoke failure within the first 2 years of ownership.

Cheffy"9500 blows the HM5 away in every measure sound-wise ". But the HM5 has far better bass extensions and dig very deep. Mids are too forward, more than 6xx.

If you're referring to volume frequency charts instead of presentation of sound, it doesn't tell the story well. Extension necessarily doesn't mean "better". A lot of headphones look good on paper and sound mediocre. The bass on the HM5 is generally anemic in my experience (5 years of ownership). It might have greater extension, but it doesn't come to out to play well. The 9500 is certainly no bass cannon, but it holds its own pretty well, and the bass sounds well-balanced with the mids and treble. A slight EQ bump around 40 and 80 hz brings the bass out nicely for an open-back.

On the 9500? I find the mids very well presented, much nicer than on the HM5 where they have a dull and "hollow" sound to them. By far the weakest point of the HM5.
I use my HM5s mostly at work where I want more isolation and I'm just playing music softly in the background to help me focus. For active listening, I much prefer the SHP9500, or my NAD HP50s (obviously a lot more expensive so not a fair comparison).

XunnobiHM5s are a decent phone, but I'd rather save up a little more and buy something more worthwhile.

AudiovirginI bought it from newegg. I have a couple of other headphones like senn HD58x, ATH Pro700, AKG 240 MK2. So not incline to spend so much. Agreed with cheffy to save and buy smth better!
Shp9500s is just smth I would like to have. For their value and neutral presentation. =)
