It's a beautiful nostalgia piece and would definitely carry it... even knowing that my GPS can do the job most of the time. I would be more interested if the price were lower. I can get it other places for about the same price.
Definitely more of a conversation piece than a tool for the backcountry. Although I tended to carry a pocket compass (not as nice as this one) when I was in Europe because I would get turned around in the cities and didn't have a smartphone. Good, as I said below, as a gift. Unfortunately, by delivery they will have missed graduation season by a couple months.
I have given a few of these as gifts in the past. Build quality is solid, face is engravable. This is as good a price as I have seen for them. Edit: The needle is held still when the cover is closed, so that it doesn't bang around. If you don't slide the cover all the way open it may look like th needle is stuck. On the ones I have given I have had engraved Tolkien: "Not all who wander are lost."
