hell I'll bite and buy it. Now I'll need to get a better dap. Anyone of opinion of FiiO X3 vs X5? Looks like there is a 530pg and 350pg threads on headfi, I don't entirely feel like reading all of it.

I bought the X3 and I really like it. I can't compare it to the X5 as I haven't heard that but I found the X3 to be far "cleaner" than the X1 in terms of audio quality.
I considered the X5 but the size was a little larger and I didn't find it as appealing. That said, the extra memory slot would come in handy and I believe the audio quality is another small step up the ladder. I don't think you'd go far wrong with either. The firmware is quite regularly updated and they seem to have decent support.

The iHiFi 800 just received rockbox support last week. More info at the end of this Head-Fi thread: http://www.head-fi.org/t/755399/xuelin-ihifi-800-a-brief-introduction/105
The player is about the same size as the FiiO x3 or a bit smaller. Without rockbox, my impression from reading those of others were that it was detailed, though a bit flat sounding and a bit anemic in the bass - the latter supported by reference audio analyzer frequency graphs. At least one person who has loaded rockbox has said it has improved this. Rockbox has also enabled 192/24 bit FLAC support.
Bottom line is that I think, for the price (can currently be found for <$200 with shipping), given the rockbox development, it is tempting competition to something like an X3. So much so that I just ordered one to try for myself.
If you want a step up from this, the Opus DAP that just dropped today looks nice.

I have the x3ii and like it very much. Depending upon what firmware is on it you may or may not want to upgrade it. With 1.4, you can still use the USB flash drive plug in option (On The Go). Anything after that has the feature deleted. As I understand it, you can revert back to 1.4 after an upgrade. I kept mine at 1.4.
