I'm a Nikon shooter.
A lot of camera snobs will poopoo a kit lense. 10-15 years ago the kit lens were junk. These days they're capable and should give you years of use. If you want nice bokeh (those blurry balls in the background) buy the 50mm lens and shoot in aperature(Av on Canon) mode at f2-2.8.
Great entry point for anyone interested in photography. I use a d600 and would love to have a camera that only weights 400g! With some practice, you'll be able to take some nice scenary pics and capture some great moments. Why buy this over using your cellphone? The Canon gives you more control over the photo but also when you go to print; this can be a big picture not just a 4x6

Rye631there is significant quality difference between Nikon's and Canon's kit lenses actually. The Canon's kit lens, while still capable of producing okay photos, won't make anything too sharp or clear even when shooting stopped down, and the IS hardly works. Nikon's kit lens on the other hand is pretty decent.
