While this might sound redundant for its intended purpose, does anyone know if the belt clip can be removed? It might be just what I was looking for to use another way.
pattmynHey, sorry for the late response. The belt clip actually can be removed. It's not the easiest thing in the world though, so if you wanted it without the clip, just email us with your name and we could send it without the clip attached (sales@carbontactics.com).
I was a backer in the Kickstarter campaign for the R2Key2, and I am very happy with my titanium clip. It's a neat little gizmo that I use daily to carry my work keys. As with all of Michael's work, the machining and fit/finish are top notch. I like that it is different than the run-of-the-mill hardware store belt clip, and I am a complete sucker for titanium.
Having said that, I am a bit disappointed to see it offered here at a considerably lower price than the Kickstarter. I paid significantly more plus shipping, only to see it here a couple weeks after receiving mine for a lot less with free shipping. That's just not cool. I also backed the Ti Slice Kickstarter and I own three of his belts with another on the way. I like Carbon Tactics products, they are well made and functional. But I will certainly think twice about future purchases, especially their Kickstarters if they're just going to offer it cheaper later.
CogsworthI know how this feels, but try to look at it from a maker's perspective. They pull together a Kickstarter campaign, which has to be built on some assumptions about volume. These assumptions are almost certainly wrong; you're on Kickstarter in the first place because it is a new product. So you set pricing before you discover what demand looks like.
Now the campaign is over, you have a much better idea of what the market looks like, how your logistics/fabrication/marketing/backoffice work (or don't), and hopefully have some money to go forward.
I promise you, one thing you look at at this point is pricing. As above, you were likely wrong about the optimal price point when you started, and that is of course the single most important variable for most products. It isn't about trying to screw people, it is how this process works.
Still no way I'm buying this... thing.
Generally? DEALS! There used to be legitimately great deals on Massdrop.. on products that were useful to me, in a variety of categories. Now it seems I log in here and there are a few watches, some fantasy knives, the occasional pair of hipster sunglasses, and maybe the odd curiosity, such as this key holder. Where has the camping equipment gone? Useful knives/tools (yes, I know there are some, but usually for ~ the same $ as everywhere else..)? Clothing/shoes/etc? A year or two ago it seemed there were 20-25 new items added per day, representing a much broader category range.. now, it's fewer than ten, and it seems to be the same items rotated out every few weeks. And most of these at prices that are the same or only a few dollars cheaper than other retailers, where you don't have to wait forever and a day to receive your item. I used to be willing to wait for a something that I ordered here because I was getting it at a deal that represented significant savings. This hasn't been the case in quite a while.. "Drop" seems to now focus all of their energy on peddling their own products, rather than securing solid deals for customers on a variety of products.
I used to sing the praises of "this awesome site called Massdrop" and recommend it to all my friends for "great deals on cool stuff." Since the refresh, I see no reason to recommend "Drop" to anyone.. It's unfortunate, but it is what it is I guess..
DSH007Thanks for the thoughtful response. I'm just a vendor for Drop, but I do know that they read comments, so your feedback will hopefully be read by them as well.
As far as my brand (Carbon Tactics), I definitely appreciate it. "Great deals on cool stuff" is a solid business model. If there's some particular type of product or cool new thing that somebody should be making, I want to know about it. If it's something in line with what I can make, I want to make it! My wife and I run our business with just one other employee, and we're a very small part of the community here, but we'll do our best to bring out some more cool new products at a good price. We have a couple in the works right now, so hopefully you'll see those soon ;) Thanks again for replying.
