Can someone explain to me why it is that these keycaps have such a premium price tag? The Deep Space caps for the Planck is $18, but these are more than $40. Are these made fo better material?

They're both made of the same material but this is SA profile while Deep Space was DSA. Deep Space planck kit contains 18x 1u caps and 1x 2u cap. In comparison, this one is 32x 1u and 8x 2u, in addition to being a sculptured set, and many more novelties to boot.

Carbon's kit includes more than twice as many keys (40 vs 19), because it also adds compatibility with the Atomic keyboard (which is the Planck's bigger sibling). Considering that the kit has more 2u keys, more novelities and is in SA profile (which uses a lot more material per cap than DSA profile of Deep Space) it's technically cheaper, but if you only care about Planck coverage, you have to pay extra for keys you probably will never use.
