You can get a bluetooth obd adapter for $10-$20 on Amazon. Buy torque for your phone and boom. This thing is overpriced as hell. +$55 for 3g? K. Here is what I use on my 99 Sierra 1500: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005NLQAHS/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1495895129&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=bluetooth+obd+2+scanner&dpPl=1&dpID=416SaTHOpkL&ref=plSrch
If you have a non GM vehicle you can get one of the $5-$10 ones and it might work. I bought a $5 one and it didn't work with my truck, but I gave it to my cousin and it works on his Nissans.

JESUSARIUS_REXThe $10 - $20 devices are OBD-II dongles and can only read freeze frame, current data and OBD diagnosticfaults. They are closed source and cannot be programmed to write CAN messages to the car to enhance it in any way.
Carloop allows you to read (like the OBD-II dongles) but also, lets you write messages to your vehicle's CAN bus. Might not be your cup of tea, but it is actually underpriced given commercial tools in the market that go for $500+
Carloop is for folks that are interested in going beyond just reading what the OBD-II dongles + Torque app can provide. For example, being able to roll up your windows automagically after your car goes above 40 mph.

JESUSARIUS_REXBelieve you missed the point of this. It's designed to be open sourced so you can do more with it. Something like this can be integrated into a secondary system easier than a bluetooth odb adapter that wouldn't open it's system to a PI or anything like that.

CarloopI misunderstood the purpose of the product. I apologize. So is it more so a tuner/ programmer, or simply reads data from the vehicle and sends a signal back. Ie you said it would close your windows above 40. Is that sent to the car when it gets to 40, or is it written to the ecu?

JESUSARIUS_REXNo worries! There's definitely a lot of junk out there so we need to be vigilant 😏
Carloop can sniff CAN messages and can sends CAN messages into the Controller Area Network (CAN) of a car. This is how the Engine Control Module communicates with the Transmission Control Module, ABS module, Body Control Module, etc.
In my example, it would read the broadcasted vehicle speed (probably sent out by ABS module) and then upon crossing the 40 mph threshold, Carloop would send the corresponding CAN message that rolls windows up.
Lots of research to figure out which CAN message for vehicle speed and windows rolling up, but not impossible.
