What is the back lighting on this watch if any? This spec from the Casio site on a similar 1A says:
  • LED backlight (Auto LED Super Illuminator Backlight, selectable illumination duration, Afterglow) Neo-brite Luminous Hands and Markers
However this is a model 1A5DR and no mention.

on the face of the screen. It’s hard to see the digital numbers in the dark. But the hands you can see fine.

Excellent watch, kinda crazy that you have to take it off and le it sit for 20-30 minutes to get an accurate temperature reading. On my wrist it always says 84 degrees or something, totally useless feature LOL. It looks and feels great, the light is good and the compass has a nice operating feature. Really designed for orienteering. BTW it is big!

This is exactly the point of contention we have with a thermometer feature on a watch. @misterman14 said it's a useless feature (and I agree) due to the fact that the wearer must first remove the watch from their wrist, then let it sit/acclimate to ambient for "xx" minutes in a shady spot before receiving an accurate temperature reading. If you're an active individual that's hiking, say, an Alpine region, in the mid-seasons of Fall/Spring, or working on a project/task where you require an accurate ambient temp, it's not always prudent or even convenient to stop and wait those "xx" minutes for the watch to acclimate. For that very reason, I keep a small analog thermometer hanging from a zipper pull on my pack and/or outer shell. Sometimes... technology is not always the best solution. Re: Occam's Razor Your very first reply implied that misterman14 and the rest of us are just ignorant to the whims of Mother Nature and the laws of Physics when it comes to obtaining an accurate temp while wearing said watch...

Just my 2 cents...This watch is not Solar...though I like the design, it's tough to buy a G Shock that is not Solar.

Mine is coming via FedEx but I can’t see any delivery options like vacation hold or hold at FedEx location. Is this due to some cost saving initiative by MassDrop? Frustrating...

misterman14Sooo, the day before my watch was set to arrive I checked again on FedEx and there was a message saying it would actually be delivered by USPS. So it was held by USPS vacation hold. I still think MD could be more responsive and or clear about deliveries. But the watch was waiting for me safely and I really like it.

It's the worst Casio watch in history: - non-working hands - lack of water resistance - a deforming small watchface from ordinary sunlight in the summer - a compass which, despite calibration, indicates what it wants - defective compass button falling out of the seat. Avoid this model, buy GWG-XXX instead.

I've never had a G-Shock, though I've always wanted one. Just realised this has *mineral crystal* and not sapphire - Is it coated or some such? How resistant is it to scratches and wear and tear? The reason I've wanted a G-Shock was the whole 'durability' aspect, which is a necessity for my workplace.

Problems do show up after 30 days, but won't be covered. Take your chances at Massdrop for minimal savings.

Can’t really say this is a good deal. May be because I’m in Japan, this price is just normal “street price”. If this is GWG instead of GG that will be really good deal. Japanese version got full black (1a3) too.

Amazon in US https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01DTJNCOE/ref=dp_olp_new_center?ie=UTF8&condition=new $197.98 no tax, free 2 days shipping for prime member and 30 day trail period free return. Not a prime member, 4~5 days shipping with no tax, return not sure, maybe. What about Massdrop? Don't get me wrong, I ordered a lot from Massdrop, but lately I saw more and more items here are higher price and longer wait time than other on line stores, not sure how this "MASS DROP"?

alanjokeUnless you live in one of five states that don’t collect sales tax (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire or Oregon), and live in one of the other 45, you’re paying sales tax.
