While it delivers on some fronts, there are certain aspects that left me somewhat underwhelmed, resulting in a 3 out of 5 star rating.
Let's start with the positives. The RU6 does an admirable job in enhancing audio quality, providing a noticeable improvement in sound clarity and detail, although a bit lean under 500Hz. The DAC functionality works well, and the built-in amplifier provides a decent boost to performance.
My enthusiasm waned when it came to the build - it seems like it will easily scratch. Cayin sells a case for it, but they are rather ugly (bright blue and orange). The controls, though functional, are on the smaller side, making them a bit fiddly to use. I was hoping for a more robust and premium feel, especially given its price point.
Another notable downside is the lack of customization options. While the RU6 gets the basics right, there are competing products on the market (cough, QUDELIX 5K, cough) that offer more features, such as equalizer settings or app integration for personalized sound profiles.
Let's be honest, this thing is a bit more of a novelty - there is only one other R2R Dongle out there that I know of. In conclusion, the CAYIN RU6 Portable USB DAC/Amp Dongle is a decent performer when it comes to audio quality, but its build quality and the absence of options prevent it from earning a higher rating. If you prioritize audio enhancement and can overlook some design shortcomings, the RU6 might suit your needs. However, if build durability and a more comprehensive feature set are important to you, you may want to explore other options in this competitive market.
