just some background... i own a sennheiser hd800s and that is kinda like my benchmark... i know that model is in a totally different range/price catergory and even closed vs open.... totally get that...
but being that the cerene was meant to be a monitoring headphone for studio use, i figured it should have a overall pretty transparent sound, much less sound stage and of course lacking that "holographic-ness" the hd800s has...
interestingly though... i found something totally different... something more akin to the warmness of the hd650 with a bit of boominess in the low and low mid... and obviously not having the same amount of detail as the hd650... totally unexpected....
this is not to say i dont like it.... i do... especially after a long day of continuous sounds/noise and music, you may want something darker and more relaxing tonally... and that is exactly when i use it.... at bedtime or close to it... its got a warm soothing tonality which i think is great for that kinda use....
thats what i think anyways =)
thanks Centrance for a great product.... side note, you absolutely nailed the headband.... very much curved enough.. sit on the head very evenly... doesnt hurt after an hour or so.... unlike some headphones that have a straighter headband.... and.... comfy amount of clamp too... not too much not too little
These are on the slightly warmer side, wit a slight emphasis on bass. Mids and highs are very clear.
Plastic construction feels quite solid, no creaking noises when moving them, also makes them nice and light to wear.
I don't think it is stated here but there are vents near the top of the cups, making these semi open.
Small negligable downside is that they dont have a replaceable cable, but so do Beyers so not a big issue.
I look forward to hopefully more Centrance products.
I'm not usually a fan of closed headphones, but the sound on the Cerene DB is so transparent. They have both an analytical sound, in that they're fairly balanced, but they still have a musicality and punchiness that's fun to listen to.
The bass response is present, but not overwhelming or boomy. The higher end recedes a bit, but isn't completely absent. There is a pronounced lack of shimmer on cymbals, but not to the extent that they feel stuffy or muted. In my listening tests, I found they can get a little overwhelming in the mids on certain albums, but modern production seems fine.
I will admit that my experience with closed headphones is limited, but the soundstage is decent for closed. It's not going to be mind-blowingly wide, but it's wide enough to appreciate the separation and direction of sound.
Build quality is fantastic, with aluminum cups and yolks. They feel incredibly durable, and I have no qualms about throwing them into a bag and forgetting about it. The only thing I would change is that the cable is not removable. If I ever get the motivation, I may mod that myself.
Overall, I'm very pleased with these for the price. They quickly became my new top recommendation for affordable closed headphones.
