How does this compare sound wise to the DACport? I have one but I'm looking for something that I can keep at my desk and this seems like it will fit the bill.
Excellent question! DACport is powered from the USB port on the computer and is limited in the available power. USB can only give it 2.5W, which needs to be shared between the digital and the analog circuitry inside DACport. So while DACport is a great combination of sound quality and output power, we were limited by the available power of the USB jack. With DACmini, which is powered from the wall, there is no such limitation, so we were able to really crank up the output stages and give you more power, enough to drive almost any headphones under the sun. DACmini features an optically-isolated power supply (5 power supplies in total), which means that it is totally protected from spikes on the power line. That gives you a solid power foundation, which results in firmer bass, solid mids and singing highs. DACmini is perfect for the desktop. I have it on my desk at home and at work and many customers do, too.
