I'm still doing research on amplifiers. There are plenty of small integrated amplifiers and power amps out there, for pretty much any budget. I'm hoping to find something with around 40 - 50 WPC (I have found that using amps with more than the necessary power tends to work well, as long as you're careful about how much extra and how high you let the volume control get). The hk 680i receiver (60 wpc into 8 ohms; I was running it between 11:00 and 12:00 most of the time) that I used for testing is not a permanent setup, but it worked well. I might send some messages around Stereophile and see if anyone has some good recommendations. I want something with a sub output or preamp output, as I will probably add a subwoofer for when I use the system for movies or gaming (something like a NHT Super8). I'd love to be able to pull the sub out of the signal without having to turn it off, but I doubt I'll be able to get a setup where that's practical. Who knows; maybe I'll get lucky and get a sub setup that blends in well enough that I don't want to turn it off when I listen to music.
Has anyone ever heard a difference in sound quality when using RCA splitters? I'm currently using the DAC built into my Woo Audio WA7, but I want to eventually upgrade it and use the Woo only as an amp. That said, if I don't get a DAC with multiple outputs, I'll probably have to split the output because I don't want the audio that goes to the Woo to hit a preamp; I want it straight from the DAC. Even if I did use a preamp out on an integrated amplifier, chances are that I would not be able to send audio to my Woo without sending it to the speakers as well. Anyways, I've heard that splitting an RCA signal does lessen quality, but as long as you use a good splitter, it should not be an audible reduction. Anyways, that got long, but can anyone confirm or deny this?
