What kind of amp are you using? I have listened to plenty of good near-field monitors, such as the ProAc Studio 100's in my friends studio ($1800 a pair; have been used to mix plenty of well-known records such as several Red Hot Chili Peppers records), and I have to say, these are pretty good. Sure, they don't beat stuff that's much more expensive, but I was very happy with the performance for the money, and I haven't even broken mine in yet.
I don't like to compare headphones to speakers. They are totally different animals, as speaker listening has crosstalk, which headphone listening does not (unless you add it in artificially with plugins or an amp like the SPL Phonitor, which can simulate crosstalk). Also, keep in mind that there's a lot more to setting up speakers than headphones. Get a good amp and put them on your head and you're good to go. Sure, maybe you can upgrade your cable or something, but that's about it. For speakers, as with headphones, your amp and cables matter (possible a bit more, but that's debatable), but now you need to worry about positioning, stands (unless they're floor speakers), angles, the surfaces around them, etc. If you're not happy with the sound, you might want to look into that. Try them on stands with the tweeters at ear level and see how that works. You should also make sure that they're not too close to a wall (unless that wall has bass traps), as walls can cause issues.
