I dont smoke so I dont know anything really about these lighters, so I too assumed these come filled with fluid and a wick or whatever and are ready to go. What all am I going to have to buy now to make one of these work before I give it to someone as a present?

EniGmA1987If they already have one of these lighters then they likely have all that is needed. But straight out of the box all you need is regular lighter fluid. Do not bother prefilling it, just strap it to a bottle of lighter fluid if you must include it.
Eventually the wick will expire and need to be pulled out a bit and snipped. I think I remember this being doable twice before a new wick must installed. (only if it is recently filled, sparks, but will not light)
Eventually the flint will wear through and you must replace it. Do not lose the spring! (though IIRC Zippo will send you new small parts if you should lose them)
But as I said. all it needs out of the box is sticker removal and fluid added. Let whoever you give it to do that. It is part of the bonding process, as is any maintenance.
Also remember that the normal Zippo windproof (1941, 1937, armour, etc) do not use butane. The BLU models use butane.
