Exceptional value for the price; in fact, for any price.
This knife punches way above its price. Fit, finish, centering & lockup are all perfect. And though it is difficult to open with the pad of your thumb on top of the stud, I found it will snap open easily every time with a thumbnail flick against the side of the stud, particularly if you push at right angles to a line between the stud and pivot - that is, up and out at the same time. Works equally well from either side, and with the reversible clip this is a perfect south-paw's blade!
The deep-carry clip is very strong, but pairing it with CF scales means it stays put, but slides easily out of my pocket . . . where it's been daily since I got it, getting a lot of use along the way. (Thought I'd carry it until the D2 needed sharpening, but that hasn't happened yet; so far, it's holding its edge longer than many 'better steel' knives I own. )
One comment about the CF. It's thicker than on any of my other knives - and I like CF a lot - which is all the more surprising that the upgrade price was $3, not $15 or $20! I did notice that the edges of the CF weren't as smoothly finished as I would like, but 15 minutes with a strip of 2500-grit sandpaper remedied that easily.
All in all, very satisfied. I'll be looking for this marque in the future, for sure.
This is far better than I expected, and I have high expectations. It’s well made, smooth operation and a perfect carry knife. Though I hate to say it? The carbon fiber scales make it look classy? Yet still mean. Very satisfied.
For the price paid, I feel like you are getting more knife than you'd get from some similarly priced knives from some of the more household names. It has a great, solid feel to it, the scales provide good grip without being like sandpaper or causing hot spots, it opens smoothly and cleanly every time, arrived very sharp and has stayed that way for a long time through daily carrying and normal everyday uses. The belt clip is very solid and strong, so if you do decide to carry it on a belt instead of a pocket (pocket for me) I would trust it to hold on well. The open center section of the handle lets you easily clean out any lint or debris that can build up in the handle. It's a very well designed knife from Dylan Mallery and works great on top of looking great. It may be considered a bit too heavy and long for an everyday carry, but other than any length restrictions required by law where someone lives, I think it's just fine to carry daily.
If I had some things to criticize, they're very minor to me. The lanyard hole being inside the handle is a unique design, but it sits so close to the blade edge when closed that anything thicker than some micro cord going through it will likely get frayed and cut over time. It's not something I use, but that may matter to someone. It also moves pretty freely by design, so if you ever heard your knife giving you a little rattle, it's most likely that piece and not an internal problem. One other minor issue is that the detent to hold the knife closed is almost too good at times, so you have to put more pressure than you would expect onto the thumb stud to get it to open. Once you break from that detent, though, the knife opens right up as fast as any automatic opener could hope to be. I figured it was due to a new knife breaking in, and while it has improved, it's still higher effort than I expected. I've just gotten used to it. Finally, after some time owning it there was the slightest bit of side-to-side play in the blade when locked open, but I honestly would pin that on normal wear and tear from everyday carry and use because I don't remember it being there at all when the knife came out of the box. As with any decent knife, this can be adjusted away with the adjustment screw(s).
Overall I'm very pleased with it, and it's now my go-to knife to carry daily. As much as I like it, and would hate to have anything happen to it, it's not a $300 knife where I'd feel a financial loss along with it being damaged or lost. At under $40 it's easily replaceable and is still well worth what you pay for it.
Good on the tolerances but the finish on the item I received was a bit off. I am not sure if it was returned by someone else or just had a rough life as of yet. The pivot seems to have "cracked" or "scratched" the carbon fiber a bit around the edge. Also, even though stonewashed typically has a few odd scratches here and there, its part of a stonewashed blade, but there are a few distinct deep scratches just under the thumb stud.
Good materials and quite well made. Smooth operation. Knife is quite heavy but the bar stock on the blade is much heavier than normal.
A flipper would improve this knife out of sight.
Initially I was disappointed with this one. I found the scales a little rough. Other than that, the knife is pretty solid. The blade deployment is particularly well done. It opens like it has a spring assist. I have to say though, Best Tech is still number one at this price range.
