Nice to see that Massdrop chose to use UPS over FedEx Smart Post to ship these. :)

Just a little update. My shovel came in yesterday (a day early), six days after being shipped. MUCH better than the 10 - 14 days I usually have to wait for FedEx SmartPost. I hope to see more drops with UPS or USPS shipping in the future. In regards to the shovel... It's great. Exactly what I was expecting and should serve my purposes perfectly. You never know when you'll have to fight off an enemy while you're digging a hole for pooping. Best to be prepared. In all seriousness though, it really is great and the price is solid considering it comes with the sheath which is expensive on it's own. And you're going to want the sheath... This is one sharp shovel.

I've had one of these for 6-7 years. Built like a tank, steel is super hard and heavy. You can use it for chopping to an extent too - like if you're digging up roots and have to do some hacking as well. Some people sharpen these as well too I think. Use it for: Yardwork, also pretty essential car/truck camping tool Don't use it for: While this is sort of a dual-purpose tool, still waaaaaay too heavy for hiking IMO.

The sheath is what makes the drop worth it to me (I'm in the U.S.). I cannot find the shovel/sheath combo or the two separately for a cheaper price anywhere. The shovel is sharpened, so I look at the sheath as almost required.

Went to Cold Steel's website hoping for a demonstration video of Less (CS's founder--is that his name?) slashing a side of beef to ribbons--you know, pieces of dead cow flying everywhere, him showing lots of bravery and bravado as he defends himself against a threatening hunk of raw meat, wearing his spandex commando suit--you know, the usual--but couldn't find one this product! Does anyone have a link? Oh wait--I see it below. Wow, makes you proud to be an American!

This is a steal at $19 w/ sheath. Nothing better for canoe camping, truck camping, or foraging in the woods. Especially awesome for preparing and then repairing campfire sites. Also great for working in planting beds while kneeling and mucking around at the beach. It's heavy duty, and the steel is thick enough that you can sharpen an edge to use as a chopper (don't expect miracles here, but it's great for roots and small stuff that would otherwise damage your knife edge). For snow only, there are much better options. A D-handle square point shovel is much more efficient and ergonomic (but bulkier--that's the tradeoff). Full disclosure: I have never needed to fight off a flock (gaggle? clowder? gam?) of mall ninjas using this shovel so cannot comment on its utility in this regard.

I owned one of these for YEARS and, the handle broke ONLY after some rather spirited throwing into a large Oak tree stump target. It gave many years of pretty hard usage, so, at 19$ WITH the sheath?!? I'm definitely going to get in on this drop!
Oh, and not that it means anything, but, I'm former USAF and Eagle Scout who's spent more time in the woods than I'd care to think about .....

I'm a rural mail carrier and one of these lives in my postal vehicle year round. I've used it multiple times to dig myself out on snowy days. I'm picking up another for my personal truck and my wife's van. Definitely worth it at this price.

I bought 4 of these a couple of years back when I was getting my boys into axe throwing. It’s a useful half-step between knife and axe but it had unexpected benefits for one of my boys. We have a permanent target set up on our yard near the woods. My eldest was a little shy and reserved. He invited some friends over and then threw 3 shovels and all of them stuck! The word spread and it gave him the opening he needed to make friends in junior high. :)

As you can see, it is possible to toss this thing with enough force to bury it a couple of inches into pine planking... :)

I own this, and like it. Great for getting roots out of the yard, clearing brush and small digging jobs. Not very ergonomic for prolonged digging, but performs really well.
Recommended.

I dont see on BladeHQ that it includes shipping for that price, when I looked just now it sells for $19.95+6.99 shipping.
Either way, you were looking at the shovel that does NOT include the sheath. This drop includes the sheath. The model on blade HQ that includes the sheath costs $29.95+6.99 shipping, so a full $10 more than on Massdrop.

I have some personal experience with this item - someone had a couple in his trunk and we used them to try to fix a berm at the range. Conclusion: it's a cheaply made piece of junk. Cheap/soft steel, poor construction, heavy and not compact. Not a serious tool - restricted to mall ninja use.
