Spanish for “cork,” Japan-based Corcho lives up to its name. Combining the recycled bark of oak trees with a specially designed fabric softener, this stationery company produces cork-covered notebooks for every occasion Read More
The Corcho is a great notebook, and it earns 5 stars even though there are a couple of issues that keep it from being perfect. You could say it is 5-star convergent.
First the good:
-It just looks great. It's sleek and the combination of earthy colors and neon bright accent's just works. The grey one, not so much. TIP: if you like the green one, join the drop early.
-The paper block is smyth-sewn in "signatures" of eight. That's papernerdic for awesome.
-The paper itself is just fantastic. The best way to describe it is 80gsm Tomeo River. It wouldn't surprise me if it actually IS 80gsm Tomoe River.
-The flexible cork cover is something else; if 'tactile addiction' were a thing, this cover would make a good case study.
-The way the rubber band is attached is ingenious (see photo). That level of attention to detail is... it just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

The not so good:
-The binding, even though smyth-sewn, is very stiff at first. In other words, the notebook will eventually lay flat, but not before a somewhat lengthy break in period. It's not a big problem, those of us with a more positive outlook would just say: it only gets better with age.
-The cover, extends too far beyond the paper block at the bottom edge. IMHO, soft covers shouldn't extend beyond the block at all. This being a, fairly strong, flexible cover it can get away with a couple of millimeters, and the top edge looks fine. However, at the lower edge the cover extends a full 5mm beyond the paper block and it doesn't look good (see photo). It's a quality control issue and that bugs me.
