I've got the little Plenue D and it's only drawback is memory storage space. Have to switch out micro SD cards. Was $200. I'm trying to figure out what makes this unit eight times better. But Cowon makes great MP3 players nonetheless.

mring1The Plenue L is very expensive and, as with all high end gear, it's not good value for money. However, I would like to give a thumbs up for the Cowon brand. I bought a Cowon Plenue 2 recently and I was impressed with the clarity and blackness of the background, beating out AK240, Colorfly U8 & FiiO X7 w/ AM3D THX module on Single Ended output for IEMS. Noise, distortion and crosstalk numbers are impressively low and the numbers they post are reliable (look up Ohm-Image's review of the Cowon Plenue D2). The interface may look a bit outdated (it's the same interface as Plenue 2) but is still classy and very snappy. Also of note is that this is one of the few players that have optical output. Unfortunately Cowon players do not have WiFi or Bluetooth. If you are looking for streaming functionality I recommend the HiBy R6 Pro or the Cayin N6ii. If you are looking for something cheaper but with good specs, the FiiO M11 and Cowon Plenue D2 are highly recommended by reviewers (I havn't tried them). Ultimately, if your playlist is still full of MP3 then just start off buying a cheap DAP with convenient UI.

mring1I use the Pioneer XDP-30R (balanced DAC *and* amp circuitry, with a balanced out). It can hold a TB of music. Sound is clean. Something would have to be *really* special to make me want to upgrade that.
