I am really interested in this as a hobbyist and the fact that it requires assembly appeals to me - however I am just curious what kind of potential the open source nature of this copter has over an off-the-shelf copter? Any ideas for expandability? Is it possible to program waypoints for it to fly by itself? I am a newbie in the quadcopter realm so please enlighten me. Looks awesome though and I will probably bite on this.

KaraziWell, the code is all open source, the design is open source, it's all open. Now, as far as waypointing goes it would be tricky to say the least. It doesn't have the capability to do that itself, so you would need some sort of camera tracking system in tandem with a computer.
In comparison to off the shelf stuff, "consumer grade" quad copters are usually tiny, and fairly limited. Hobbyist grade stuff like the arducopter is much more powerful, but with a higher pricetag.
