I am fairly new to Massdrop and currently participating in 3-4 drops. The most frustrating part of the process is waiting for weeks to get the product once drop is over. Can't they keep the inventory in hand with an option to return to Vendor/Partner if the drop falls short or is not successful. From what I can tell 90% of the drops are successful which justifies holding inventory on hand. Anyone agree? This would make the experience so much better
In theory this is the ideal solution for the customer, but probably not a good solution / business model for MD. What you are suggesting is a online wholesaler like Costco. MD has a completely different business model. As this site grows I'm sure they will update their strategy and toy around with ideas like this.
Not really...what I am suggesting is that as they prepare for drops, they usually have an idea of the size of the drop (100, 200, 500 units). Since they deal in a limited number of items on a weekly basis, it's plausible to have part of the inventory on hand before the drop begins (or have them available mid drop) so that shipping is fairly soon after the drop. The current process of ordering with vendor after the drop, receiving it at the warehouse and then reshipping back is what delays the gratification of buying at MD. Another solution would be drop shipment. Instead of having them shipped to MD warehouse, ship directly from Vendor using solution such as Ariba. I am sure they will figure this one out as I know that is a sore point. It's what we call in logistics world a "Just in Time" inventory. Also known as Kanban in Japan
