Just got mine in the mail. I'm not sure how to review it because I don't know if the scroll wheel is working right or not. If I just scroll the wheel lightly, it doesn't track consistently; If I push it down with my finger as I scroll, it works.
It's not really comfortable to push and scroll rather than just scroll with how the mouse is set up. So, if the mouse is working as intended, the scrolling is embarrassingly bad.
Has anyone else experienced this with their mouse?
Edit: Massdrop replaced my trackball, and the replacement didn't have the scrolling issue. I can now say that I'm very happy with this purchase and would recommend it.

CharlesMine behaves in the same way; scrolling occasionally skips when using a light tough but seems fine while pushing down slightly. As far as I know this is not necessarily a defect, but rather a known quirk with the device itself.

nm156Mine scrolls smoothly regardless of pressure; I suspect you may have a bit of oil or grease impeding traction of the scroll barrel against the O-ring "tires" that actually turn the scroll sensor inside, as Ripster shows here:
search
I'd suggest opening it up -- just 3 screws, one hidden under an "unplug before servicing" sticker, then the top lifts right off -- to wipe any residual lubricant off the tires and barrel, maybe use a very mild solvent such as window/eyeglass cleaner applied to a cotton swab or clean rag to wipe them down. As shown in Ripster's pic, you may want to open it up periodically to clean accumulated crud off the tires anyway.

SubGothiusThanks for the response and tip. The scroll wheel doesn't skip very often, or at least isn't too noticeable, but it might be a good idea to open anyway to make sure the wheel area is clean.

SubGothiusThanks for posting that. I've opened mine up and found that the grooves that hold the scroll wheel in place are cut too deep, causing it to be loose. I've contacted MD and they've been great about getting a replacement to me.

CharlesMine's the same way, but I'm pretty sure that's by design, so the scroll barrel "floats" to accommodate wear/shrinkage of the rubber tires; if it were more tightly mounted in a fixed axis, it'd start skipping as the rubber wore down or shrunk with age.

SubGothiusI get that it should not be mounted at a fixed point in order to accommodate wear, but right now it's so loose that it doesn't even make contact unless I hold it down while scrolling. Basically, brand new it's having a problem I'd expect from a mouse that's at least a few years old.
Edit: Just received my replacement unit from Massdrop. The scroll wheel works far better, and is what I expected. It's still "loose" as it just floats on top of the inner roller, but actually scrolls reliably.
