I asked this question over on the poll that spawned this drop, but I'll ask it here also...
Let me start by saying this isn't a slight against this keycap set, which I think is cool and in which I will likely be partaking, but rather a process question of how this drop was chosen from those in the poll.
DZ got 16/659 votes (2.43% or thereabout) so I'm curious why it was chosen over those that received more votes. Particularly as the creator of the set with the most votes was also commenting in the poll discussion.
Again, not a slight against DZ, just a curiosity. Also, I'm new to the MK scene so there may be other issues of which I'm unaware. TIA!
I don't represent Massdrop, but I know from experience that the ranking a particular product achieves in a community poll rarely translates to any sort of order or position in regards to becoming an actual drop. Commonly, MD will reach out to many (or all) members of the poll and they will arrange a drop with whomever responds first or whomever is most willing to work with them. So you will see some polls where only the 5th or 6th-ranked item gets a drop, and that's due to a number of factors largely out of MD's and the community's control. I hope that helps.
Again, I do not represent Massdrop. I'm sure they would love to run a drop for the 1st place in every poll but that doesn't always match up with reality.
Also, Danger Zone was featured in a different poll by @livingspeedbump in which it placed 2nd after 733 votes, so... keep that in mind. :)
@elFick As @Data pointed out, we work with the polls, but especially for custom keycap drops there are lot more variables. One key variable for these drops is also how the interest checks are going on GH or other places because of MOQs required.
@Data and @kunalkumar Cool, thanks for the enlightenment. Title bar render looks awesome btw.
Like Kunal touched on, there is a lot of talk and discussion going on about these sets in the community, and MD polls alone definitely don't accurately gauge interest perfectly for things like this. For starters, the designers own the rights to their sets, yet anyone can put an option for a set in a poll. So while "Pulse" for example, often tops the polls, it will never be run again. Other sets like "Penumbra" will never be run on MD, so they don't really gather the best date in the case of keycap sets.
The manufacturer also plays a huge role in what sets can run. Signature Plastics, the company behind SA profile caps, is slammed right now, hence the Feb. shipping date due to some huge orders of SA caps recently (T0mb3ry, I'm looking at you and Carbon ;) So it would be silly for MD to run another SA set after this, regardless of popularity, simply because the shipping date would be something crazy like April haha.
That was a very short answer, but you asked a very good question! If you want to get involved and check out sets as they are being designed check out these links
If you have further questions PM me on those forums and I can further explain things in more detail, i just don't want to take away from DATA's set too much here!
@livingspeedbump Thanks for the links. I had already subscribed to geekhack, deskthority, /r/MK, /r/mechmarket, /r/ergodox, and /r/olkb a few weeks ago. I've also been checking out keychatter.com and catching up on the board makers podcast. I wasn't aware of /r/keycapdesigners though. Lots of cool stuff and great ideas out there. It will take me a while to digest even a portion of it. :)
