About to pull the trigger, but I'm concerned with the reported "humming" during track silence and required tube rolling. Anyone who owns this already, did you need to roll, mod, or use a cheater plug to get rid of the humming? (I've read that aging works about 50% of the time)

TherikoxideI got mine and the tubes that come with it are pretty cheapo tubes. Think of tubes as an accessory. That said, my first venture into tube rolling has not, so far, been successful. I got a pair of tubes. You have to get the ones that match the numbers printed on the machine - one is a power tube (large -6AS7) and the other is a pre-amp tube (small- 6SN7). Apparently tubes must be burned in, and I am currently doing that according to the instructions I got from the people who sold me the new tubes. After 72 hours, the hum is still there :( - so I am not quite sure whether they just need more time or what. I will continue to update this as I find out more. Good luck. I'm pretty sure it's worth the bother.

Stephen879The hum comes from the power and circuit design of this amp. Not all tubes do it but some do.
You can get rid of the hum for any tubes you want to use without any kind of burn in with just 1 simple mod that is just adding 2 capacitors into the amp. No tubes should hum whether new or old, and if they do that means there is an incompatibility with the tubes and the audio circuit. Thankfully in the case of this amp, a mod can be done to fix that.

TherikoxideYes tube rolling does work but you have to get the right set of tubes some tubes are more prone to humming than others. But here's a topic that is not talked about sometimes the humming is electrical noise or RFI noise created by other components in your household. Some headphones and headphone wire sets themselves act as antennas and pick this noise up and transfer it to your ears. Sometimes this dirty power signal is traveling inside your wall power source through your 110 or 220 V of your house goes into the amplifier and transfers and gets amplified through the tubes. Wall warts and brick power supplies are a common noise source because they use switching power technology that is very dirty and noisy , you can try by disconnecting those inside your room that you're listening music to also LED drivers for LED lights and florescence CFL's cause noise so switch off . As you can see in my photograph I have extremely good AC noise filtering system sitting below my dark voice. Before I install that I had some noise coming through my dark voice from dirty electrical components backfeeding to the power supply at the house .

ThermalAlchemyDo you know the total wattage the Dark Voice pulls from the wall? I have a cheap power cleaner but I dont know how much the entire unit pulls in watts......

TherikoxideI had this amp on order but i canceled it a few days ago due to mostly poor reviews. From what i understand from research is some models hum/smoke/break and the tubes for this aren't as common as tubes are for the little dot. I also canceled this drop because I'm waiting on a previous drop of the little dot 1+ due to ship. I ordered two new RCA tubes (i like bass and warmth, along with a new opamp the OPA2107). It seems stupid to spend $200 on an amp only to have to solder and fix it instead of enjoy it.

iCeOL8TRAmnesiaI found that the dark voice with the cheap Chinese original tubes pull 53 W of power after you change the tubes out with some quality old stock tubes they'll pull 60 W of power .

iCeOL8TRAmnesiaStill every other tube amp thats really good like this one costs far more so its worth the risk if you study internet deals like I do(I am a master of deals now) this amp is considered low end but its always reviewed with stock tubes(which are widely considered to be inferior and so you have to upgrade them(this is considered allot of the fun of a tube amp)). Its considered laid back and relaxed no matter what tubes you put in it according to the headfonia review, but also has more precision(clarity) but they say graininess(likely stock tubes) than the crack but the crack is more mid forward, smooth, but somehow also more lively and I assume musical(but less detailed and also this was the stock crack they compared not with the speedball upgrade which is highly recommended and raises the price of that kit to over 400)(its much cheaper on deal(I noticed the crack deals usually come in the summer around july 4th(+- a month in each direction to be safe) but I havent had the money when they came and went twice......) which doesnt come often). The crack is probably better but it does go on deal rarely... this is on deal now.... the wa6 is 600(its definitely not 3x better audio wise and the wa6se is 1100) plus and the torpedo kit has gone up in price to 400 and thats without the nicer components. Also since most good tube amps are point to point they are easy to upgrade components and or modify considering someone whos tested or can design has chosen the right components for you or you can match similar ones. This amp used to be 300 plus 50 bucks shipping and there is only one seller now that youkamaroo or whatever that does it 200 plus 40 and this is still lower. Im conflicted cause I wanted some ChiFi iems but now i realize chinese new year means all of china goes on vacation for a month and they dont have sales during this holiday. So I'll probably end up snagging this... the possible problems are worth the risk at this price(which cmon the risk has to be low just because a few smoke on youtube out of the thousands sold means you have a 95+% chance of getting a decent one and everyone says they are precise and clear so that there pretty much answers the quality control its just component failures(allot of these are out of manufacturer control of course they could preburn and match all the components but this is time consuming and costs more in components and not every manufacturer does this and I wouldnt expect one in china to do it they arent burson) or shipping damage or shifting causing problems and if that happens to me ill just fix it myself I have a multimeter and I'll figure it out eventually).
My problem is there is a 200$ pair of chifi iems and I was hoping for a chinese new year sale but it looks like the whole country shuts down and there are no deals(in the usa we have deals on christmas day but only in recent years with the internet obviously so you cant expect china to be caught up to us).

bYtockYou could usually never go wrong with any of the plain Jane off-the-shelf new old stock Sylvania's or RCA's . EBay is full of tens and thousands of these tubes they're extremely common you could get them any day of the week 365 days of year there's no production run shortages because they stop making them along time ago. Lol.

TherikoxideFrom my experience the hum comes mostly from the 6SN7 tube. Stock tube hummed initially but became dead silent after a couple of hours but I'm not very pleased with its sonics. I got a couple of inexpensive tubes so far, Sylvania 6SN7 is one of them and it seems to be pretty quiet. RCA 6SN7s are reported to be quiet as well.

Mine is still quite after a few years using Sennheiser 800 that is ultra sensitive high efficiency.
Sennheiser 800 HD Are legendary for being analytical and picking the finest details out of music. But also having to ability to hear any noise in a headphone amplifier.
I’m thinking of buy some new modern day production tubes. Giving up buying any of the old new stock tubes.
Their prices are falsely enhanced way over priced by tube hoarders and Tube flippers on eBay.
There is Polish company still making tubes a Russian company still making tubes I believe there’s one Italian company still making tubes then you have the better high-end Chinese companies that still make new tubes. There is the Japanese companies that make tubes a little bit pricey.
But now the name of the game is stop depleting the old new stock of old tubes (NOS)
Find modern day equivalent even if you have to get some of the adapters and only buy new tubes now.
