How can this be called a "low distortion amp" when the spec says "< 2%"? Yes, .1% is less than 2% and is generally results in undetectable distortion. But 1.9% is also less than 2% and is detectable to the trained ear. I'm interested in this amp, but the 2% rating disturbs me. Anyone got any thoughts on this?

From what I understand, any OTL amp is suppose to have less distorsion than a transformer coupled amp. All I know for sure is, I've spoke to many owners (here and head-fi forums)about this amp and the general consensus is for 2 bills, it's a no-brainer or it's a steal. Sure you can do better (Woo Audio etc) but it's going to COST you. I ended up buying one today (from the Chinese manufacturer) advertised elsewhere, with free shipping and a return policy for 199. Massdrop needs to improve return policy as you cannot go through the original vendor (if you have a problem/issue) as they are produced and then shipped to Massdrop for the "community ". What happens if you get a bad tube or shipping damage or it hums...things to be aware of when purchasing a tube amp.

Two things to consider. Deciding whether you will like an amplifier by looking at its specs is like deciding whether you will like a musical performance by looking at the notes on staff paper. Jimi Hendrix and the 15-year-old who lives next door can both play the exact same notes of The Wind Cries Mary, but they won't sound the same. Likewise, distortion specs are just numbers on paper. You have to listen to the amp to decide whether you like the way it sounds (or, as a substitute, listen to people who already have the amp). Moreover, all distortion is not created equal. Distortion in a solid state amp is nasty, but tube amps like the DV generate second-order distortion, which is very musical; in fact, "distortion" is the wrong word altogether, because it doesn't distort the signal, it reinforces it. I'm listening to my DV as I write this, and it is the cleanest, purest, most musical sound I can imagine. For me, the ultimate test of an amp--like the ultimate test of a musical performance--is how it makes me feel. And this amp makes me feel ecstatic.
