Any recommendations on a good dac to compliment this amp?
Most people agree as long as the dac is good it won't male a huge difference, with that said anything quality with an optical port, no ground loop possibility.
Xd05 and modi uber come to mind.
Depends on how good the rest of your gear is and whether they'll let you tell the difference. DACs do make a big difference but on the entry end, they don't make as much difference as amps. And like everything else in audio there's diminishing returns. You'll get a big difference between say a FiiO ($30) and a Modi ($100), to a Metrum ($800), to a Audio-GD Master 7 ($2k), to a Lampizator ($5k), to a Berkeley Alpha ($16k), to a Trinity ($50k).
But to complement a DarkVoice? A $99 ODAC would probably be good enough.
Yep, didn't see any point to ramble on about ones that are irrelevant to this situation. For his sake any of the ones in the same range quality wise as a modi uber will have no noticeable differences. It's easy to list off ones that can but really serves no practical point for this.
A for effort though.
Your original post was not in context, you said there won't be any huge differences in DACs which is incorrect, which I have corrected. But within the context of the original question an ODAC or modi would be sufficient.
It's not easy to list either, it takes years to listen to every DAC on that list. I must admit though, the Berkeley and Trinity ones are what I hope to listen to one day.
Like I said, a for effort, but typing your list based on reviews and what I'd hope is some personal use, wasn't that hard. I've used 3 of the ones you listed plus a few more and I've been doing this for a year, trying new flavors when you can doesn't need to take years.
Best one I've personally used was a Musical fidelity M1DAC and the difference was minor at best, only noticeable with out really focusing on 24 bit depth audio files. I honestly doubt I'd buy one more than it though, it would take a stellar personal experience or someone or trust really praising it
I have heard the M1 with a Musical Fidelity amp along with my PMC speakers, supposedly the designer for PMC used the same setup. But it didn't tickle my fancy. I've heard a lot more DACs than those I listed, but I only put down the ones that made a difference for me personally.
I find DACs makes a bigger difference to speakers than headphones, I suspect it's mainly due to the way music is represented - with speakers you're in front of a stage and you're listening for realism. With headphones you tend to focus more on micro detail and tone.
