Newbie audio question regarding this- I recently also purchased the E-MU Teak Headphones and figured this DarkVoice would power them adequately. It doesn't, however, unless I boost the signal first through my phono preamp. The impedance of the headphones is 25 ohm, and this DarkVoice imedance is 32-600 ohms... is it because the 25 ohm of the headphones is outside of that range?
Low impedance means it runs on higher current (amperage) and lower voltage (since to get power it's amps x volts = watts) since you need more watts to power high impedance and increasing voltage is a safer way of obtaining more power since higher amperage risks more heat through the wires, and more voltage is needed to get through the resistance ohms, so less voltage on low resistance means your higher amps, so this isn't designed to handle the high amperage and low voltage unlike an HD650 which would run low amps and high volts due to volts needed to get through the resistance to achieve the watts through resistance.
At least that's how I'm remembering physics class. It might not be exactly that, but I think the principles are pretty close.
This amp has no transformer after the power tube and outputs raw voltage against a recommended impedance rating between 32-600 ohms. Honestly, 32 is even pushing it unless the headphones are very efficient. To reach the required power for headphones at a rating of 25 ohms you would need a lot more current than tubes can cleanly produce since without a transformer the raw voltage can't be stepped down to increase the current to what's needed.
