Anyone have experience using tube amps for trance music?
Even the best tubes usually have some bass rolloff. I'd recommend Mullards or perhaps cheaper russian tubes if you want the extension to remain. My personal preference are Amperex tubes which have some slight subbass rolloff but have a liquid warmth in the mids that I can't give up and that others don't seem to have.
But I'm also talking about the 6dj8 family of tube which are unrelated to these.
Sounds like you have some experience with tube amps. I currently use the Senheiser hd650 with the Rupert Neve RNHP amp. I upgraded the sound card on my computer, but there seems to be a humming. It just seems like there is room for improvement. I just bought a second pair of hd650 for for home use from massdrop. The first pair was from Sweetwater. I am going for a different am this time. MD will be delivering in 4 months. Any other suggestions tubes or tubeless? I would appreciate the info.
650 sounds best on tubes for sure. I won't say one amp is better than another, but what is your source? Just a better sound card? You should be using a nice standalone DAC or a dac/amp with a nice DAC in it. I don't know about your amp but you should have zero hum I'm pretty sure.
Just make sure too whatever amp you decide on is powerful for the hd650 to sing it's best, that alone eliminates most amps. The Darkvoice here has more than enough power but I haven't heard the amp so I cannot comment.
But if you happen to buy an amp that takes 6dj8/6922 tubes definitely try amperex tubes is all I'll say.
I hear the vali 2 sounds good with an hd650 too and a bonus is it uses only one tube. Honestly I'd want a pinch more power but only a pinch it shouldn't be bad at all and it's the popular budget pairing?
Just do a lot of reading before you make a decision, it's nice to be informed. I wouldn't worry too much though, as while the 650 may require a lot of power to sound it's best, it still sounds good underpowered and amp-matching for it really isn't hard at all.
I use a Rupert Neve RNHP amp. With a sound card connected. It is a 500 buck amp and supposedly a good brand. I ordered a second Sennheiser hd650 for home use. I am looking for another amp. Not sure if I want a portable one or not. There is so much info and so much mis information out there. As far as the humming on the Rupert Neve, I just bought a 3.5 to rca connection. I will see if there is any change. Nut I am open to suggestion for amps, portable or not.
Didn't even think about a dac. Guess I would like a dac/amp combo.
Guess I need to look at tube amps Rupert Neve is not tube. It would be lame if I had to buy both a dac and amp.
Rupert Neve RNHP is 300 ohms.
The amp drives up to 600 ohms.
well get a decent dac over a new amp for tubes
