Got mine today (was pretty hard to explain the people at the customs authorities what this is :D), burnt it in a little and tried it with all my current headphones.
The DT990 are absolutely fantastic on this, I already liked them before but this amp brings them to another level.
The TH-X00 are a bit too dark for my taste, same for the LCD-2 Classic. Now I´m really interested how the HD6XX (which I havent recieved yet) will sound as most people claim this to be a really good match.
Got lucky with built on my unit. Only minor imperfections but nothing serious.
As far as tube rolling goes, I can highly recommend to replace the smaller tube. I got a 6SN7 NOS from General Electric and it opens up the soundstage for me just a bit more and I overall enjoy the sound more (might change with further testing).
The only downside of this thing is how incredibly hot it gets. I cant touch most parts of the chassis when this thing is completely warmed up. I dont wanna know how hot this gets in summer, maybe I will have to place a fan next to it then.
Overall I am pretty satisfied with the Darkvoice, especially for this price.
Let us know how the 6xx is on the dark voice be solid state when it arrives.
I know how that feels. Already ordered the 6xx twice from two different drops :-)
Yeah, thinking about picking up the HD600, HD660S or the DT1990 to have another headphone for this amp in the meantime
Good choices. Everyone raves about the 660s but the one I demo’d had pretty bad bass distortion. If possible try it out first. I am likely getting the dt 1990 pro this week.
660s with this amp is incredible.
Cool thanks. Not sure if I should get a WA7 or just get a dark voice
Just joined the dark voice drop. WooAudio will have to wait till later
good choice. Woo is amazing. I would go with the DV and run it for a while then see if you wanna upgrade to a woo amp.
Ended up getting a HDV 820 and a Dark Voice.
I got rid of my DV and got woo 22...
You and pvrse are not messing around. HDV 820 and Woo 22. Expensive gear. I'm interested to hear both your thoughts on the new toys.
HDV 820 is really really good with the 800S and the Fostex Purplehearts, it also helps the 6XX but is overkill for the 6XX.
combined with the 800s you basically have perfect headphones but lacks hard hitting sub bass (Which some people don’t prefer) treble is maaaybe a little bit too much but not exactly harsh. The way the treble is setup allows you to hear details such as breaths and guitar plucks with clarity you likely haven’t heard before.
the imaging/soundstage is spot on.
the 800S made me actually appreciate genres that I didn’t care for before Because they are that good. For gaming this combo is unbeatable. I can’t Help but notice that I do find myself analyzing And judging the quality of recordings of songs more often then just kinda hearing the music. (Ifyaknowhatimean)
i am going back to songs I didn’t like before and finding out that I actually do like them which is cool. Except for Muse. I still don’t Like Muse.
the Fostex PurpleHearts Bass hits MF’n hard with the HDV 820, pretty good match. It Rattles your whole face. These have even brighter treble than the 800S but are very fun, and better for hip-hop and EDM than the 800S. I reviewes the purplehearts before with the HPA4BL and thought they were good but the powerful amp on the HDV 820 kicked it up to <insert extreme analogy here>
The 6XX also improves about 10-15% with the HDV820 vs the HPA4BL. It opens it up more, but the 6XX is no match for the 800S. I still recommend the 6XX and the HiFiman 4XX for lower budget stuff. DT 1990 Pro for mid-to-high end.
if u just want to have fun Purplehearts with a powerful amp is the way to go.
I have the Sophia, don't like it, and have the matched pairs going in this one, absolute HEAVEN
I see the Treasures in the Woo.
Nice setup. Enjoy. Maybe I’ll treat myself in 6-7 years if my kids ever finish college.
Make them finish a 4 year even if it takes 6 or 7
I need a dac upgrade, dont wanna blow more cash whats a good sub 500 to pair with this
Since you want the tubes to do all the talking. I would recommend the JDS Labs EL DAC. Based on reviews it’s a very clear DAC, with multiple input options, DSD support (if that interests you) and reasonably priced at $250. I’ve been eying one of these for myself. I tried a friends JDS Labs Element DAC/Amp and was impressed. I'm debating betweeen the EL DAC and Element. I don’t really need an Amp but the Element is a sweet package.
The Topping D50 is also worth a look. It’s $250 like the EL DAC and gets solid reviews. I own a Topping NX4 portable DAC/Amp and think it’s great and would not have problem buying more their products.
I’ve considered some of the more expensive DAC options available (Schiit Bifrost, Aune S16), but I’m not certain my current gear or ears would benefit from the additional cost.
A very good dac/amp can put nice amps to shame
I have the Aune S6 DAC otw, along with a topping d50 as well. See how they do with my multi audio mixture setups
I kinda hate my dark voice. Huge channel imbalance only lets me Play music at one volume (loud) in stereo.
I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the S6 and D50.
Does your have a huge channel imbalance?
I would really like mine if it didn’t.
To be honest, I sold mine and got a Bottlehead Crack during the last sale.
my DV has a tung sol ebay nos and a treasure, i use 660s
I was tempted to get a Crack from that sale but due to lack of soldering skills, i stopped myself from buying a bunch of resistors and caps i cant use
Woo Audio WA8 arrives tomorrow. I can throw my DV in the trash soon.
I bought another dark voice and it is actually good, my older dark voice must have been faulty.
Woo Audio WA7tp has better detail and depth(or layers) of sound but the dark voice throws the sound stage way out faaaar left and right.
I would say the dark voice is good for the price if you don’t get a faulty one.
