View Full Discussion I'm a tube aficionado. Make no mistake. This was my first purchase from Massdrop. I've been happy with it since the beginning. The stock tubes work well, but they can be improved. I tried a few options and I got the bad hum everyone has mentioned and it wasn't going away as described by a long break in period (too long). So, I swapped the small tube out and the hum vanished. I'm using a NOS RCA 6AS7G Black Plate Audio Tube RCA tube for the big tube and ended up with a NOS 6SN7GTB Sylvania/Baldwin Top Getter Vintage Tube for the small tube. Both purchased on Ebay. NO HUM at all - music is lush, rich and detailed to my ears. Excellent tubes and great sound. It loves my Massdrop Sennheiser 6XX as well as all of my planars, but it seems to like the Sennheiser a lot. If you like a warm sound and can explore some tube options, I think you will be very happy with this amp. I have been with mine. It's been flawless for quite some time. If I hadn't indulged in a couple of Massdrop's Cavalli amps which I am breaking in now, I'd be listening to it right now. But, I'll be back to it just like I was earlier in the day for a internet DJ show I was presenting. Let it break in over a long time, feed it with a good DAC source and better than stock tubes, you will be smiling as I am when I listen to it. Good luck!
Thanks for sharing your tube picks. I too have the common buzz noise but have yet to identify replacements so there’s a strong chance I’ll follow your lead. Thanks
You're welcome. I hope it works out for you and sounds as good as you wish. As always, good luck in your searches.
