got mine a week or so ago, and the stock tubes are just fine! No complaints. However I am using a NOS Tung Sol 6SN7GTB that I already had. The amp is dead quiet. These 6XX's love being coupled directly to the tube. I am seriously pleased. I was going to build a Head Amp, but honestly, as someone has already said, I couldn't touch this for under $400.00, and it looks great.

Thanks! I love hearing feedback from the community. What about the dark voice makes it such a good compliment to the 6xx in your opinion. I hear people talking and writing about it being warm. Does it make the bass more intense or just fuller? Does this impact the trebble in a negative way?

Personally I don't like DV with HD650, it sounds too dark and everything sounds muffled & recessed including the vocals so I don't think you'll hear any annoying trebles. There's more bass on HD650 but through DV, it sounds bloated/muffled. The only exception where HD650 became tolerable to listen on DV was when I was using silver cables with it which I brought the vocals forward; but then it took away the bass.
HD600 on the other hand pairs really well with any tube amps such as DV. Rock and pop songs sound especially good through it. But neither HD650/600 plays EDM well on DV.
I like HD650 on solid state amps like Jotunheim the best especially through a XLR output. It can play pop, rock and EDM all very well.
With that being said, I regret purchasing my HD600 because it's pretty limited in what genre of music it can play well and it only pairs well with tube amps . Even when it's paired to a tube amp, it still lacks bass to fully enjoy rock & pop songs (although this may be remedied by using high-end tube amps). HD650 is a challenge to find amps that pairs well with it but when it does, most of the songs are enjoyable to listen to. However, I do still find that HD650 is lacking in bass even when hooked up to CH650S on Jotunheim. So I decided to buy another headphone dedicated for EDM (Fostex TR-X00 Ebony).

Interesting. I'm using it on the X1s right now and it sounds really good. I will eventuailly get the X7s so I can hear balanced class a sound. Either way I want to get the dark voice because I dont have a tube amp and this seems to be such a great bargain. This way ill have a tube amp to listen to this and all my future headphones. I wanna be able to tube roll eventuailly when I wanna change up the sound. I'm looking forward to getting it eventually haha. Massdrops so slow. When I do ill make sure to tell everyone what I think.

The right tube combo can brighten up the sound of the DV with your 650. There are a lot of good post about tubes in this discussion thread. Search in my name and you’ll find some. Tons of good info in this thread. I learned a lot.

You’re following in my footsteps. I got the X1S, a great DAC and OK amp. Then I picked up a DV and recently added an X7S to the mix. My DAC amp situation is settled for the foreseeable future. My biggest complaint right now is that I don’t have enough time in the day to listen to everything.
I love th DV. With the right tubes it sounds superb. I also really like the X7S it’s not a night and day difference from the X1S, but it’s noticeable in a very good way. Especially in balanced mode with the 6xx.
My chains are as follows: - GPM/Plex - FLAC & MP3 -> MacBook Pro (USB)/Chromecast Audio (Optical) -> X1S -> X7S -> 6xx/4xx; - GPM/Plex - FLAC & MP3 -> MacBook Pro (USB)/Chromecast Audio (Optical) -> X1S -> X7S (Pre Out) -> DV -> 6xx

This was all super helpful thanks so much! Yeah you have the set up I am striving to get eventually. I will definitely read some stuff from your profile like you said.
How do they both sound with the 4xx?
Do you turn the volume up all the way on your computer when you plug the aune in? I find that if I do that I can barely move the nob before its to loud.
I'm a little embarassed to say this but isnt there supoesed to be a prety noticeable differnece between using the aune or onboard audio. I feel like there isnt much of a difference or if there is its very small. I think the imaging might be better when I use the aune but I'm having a little trouble spotting the differences. Does the X7s make the differences more obvious or am I doing something wrong?

The 4xx sound great via SE in the X7S. I don’t have balanced cables so I can’t say how they sound in that scenario. I haven’t listened to the 4xx much via the DV, but to my ear with my tube setup they sound about the same as from the X7S with a touch less treble intensity. The DV is for the 6xx.
With the X1S 10th I do have the computer(2014 MBPr) volume all the way up. Volume knob is between 12-3 for comfortable listening .
As far as onboard vs external DAC/Amps it depends on your computer. I don’t think you are doing anything wrong. Some computers have very good sound cards and you may not hear a big difference without A/B testing and real critical listening. How are you sending the signal from your computer to the X1S? I am using USB.
The difference in SQ when I first listened to the DV after about a month of listening to the 6xx via the X1S astonishing to me. I had never heard tubes before and the “tubey” sound was a pleasant surprise and continues to please.
To my ear the X1S and X7S sound similar. That said, the X7S provides a more full sound to me. The low end is also beefed up and drums hit a little harder. When I switch between the 2 the X1S sounds thin. If I never heard the X7S I wouldn’t know this and be content with the X1S. In balanced mode the 6xx sound stage opens up and everything clears up. Driving the 6xx with a more powerful amp lifts some f the darkness of the 6xx. The highs sound good without being harsh or sibilant. Of all my headphones the 6xx change sound signature the most depending on how they are amped. This may be one of the reason they are so popular.
Is it worth getting the X7S if you have the X1S? Maybe. For me I had to scratch the itch and find out. It’s part of the fun of the hobby. I wasn’t completely satisfied with the X1S as an amp because it didn’t sound much better than my Topping NX4 DAC/amp when driving my 6xx or 400i (yolk broke and returned). If I knew then what I know now, I would get the X7S and a cheaper DAC and save a few dollars. That said, I have no regrets owning the X1S. It’s a highly functional, well deigned and capable DAC that looks great on my desk stacked with the X7S.
Is it worth getting the DV? Abslutely! It’s my favorite piece of equipment. It looks great. It’s unique and a conversation starter. It’s customizable and it just sounds great with my headphones. Feeding it from the X1S and/or X7S is easy and again it sounds great. Which is the ost important thing.
Wow, that’s a long answer. I feel like I have a setup that will give me many years of enjoyment and like sharing what I have learned over the past year in this hobby.

Thanks so much this was a really helpful response. I am currently using a imac to usb to x1s to 6xx. Maybe I havnt noticed the difference so much because my phone is the LG V20 so it sounds prety good when I plug the 6XX into it. I also pluged it into the Lenovo laptop and that's where I think it sounded a little less clear with peoples voices although I'm not too sure.
I completely understand the need to "scratch the itch". That's why I'm getting the DV I wanna hear a difference and I think I will really enjoy it. Its a lot cheaper to tube roll then have 20 sets of headphones lol.
I like the smothe laid back sound of the 6XX. It amazes me how it is still so clear and defined with good imaging while remaining easy to listen to but sometimes I feel lile I would like solething with more wow factor for fun. I am hoping the 4xx will deliver that. I am hoping when I hear the 6XX on the DV that will become it's new home and when I get the 4xx I imagine it will be best to keep it on the X1s since it is a planar. Ive heard planar does better with solid state amps.
