Cool7I bought my Crack built by someone else. It sounds very nice, but was put together by an amateur. I only bought it because I found it on ebay for about 150 dollars. I -really- want to build my own with gold plated tube sockets, better capacitors, and add the speed ball upgrade at the same time. My hearing is shot.. I can only hear to 15khz so I'm not the best person to tell you what sounds good or not, but my Crack is silent unless I have a bad tube inserted. However if you put headphones on me and did A/B comparisons with cheap solid state amps I probably couldn't tell you the difference because my hearing is that bad. It sounds really nice and pretty much everyone agrees on the internet. Are you wanting to pay a premium to build it yourself? Part of what I like about the Crack is that I trust the USA sourced power transformer is wound right and will last forever. Also I -am- willing to pay the premium to have to build it myself. I am not sure about the Darkvoice Chinese parts. The Darkvoice has a lot more parts onboard based on the photos I've seen of the guts. It looks nice and simple. It's likely that the parts on the Darkvoice such as the headphone jack and volume knob are actually nicer than the Bottlehead. Those parts on my amp along with the power switch seem pretty cheap. They'd all be parts I'd want to replace on my own build.
Cool7Well, the Crack pairs wonderfully with the senns.
But honestly I don't think it will drop anytime soon.
If I were you, I'd just get the DarkVoice now and be done with it.
Ever get buyer's remorse or something, and the Crack comes back - oh well, just buy it as well, takes two to tango... ;)
Cool7A lot of people on Head fi rave on about crack/hd650 combination, but I imagine it will probably be a while until it comes back on,I am currently looking out for a crack for my hd650,if our dollar wasn't down so much compared to US dollar at moment I would of ordered one already straight from bottlehead.
beno04We are on exactly same boat. But on the bright side, ordering DV here will probably save me a weekend for something else plus some extra fun/pain for tube rolling. As you might already know, they only selling one way ticket to the "tube rolling". ;-)
Cool7I have 25 tubes for the small tube and a few for the power tube. I wanted to tube roll out of the box with this bad boy but it is frustrating as every tube out of 25 (plus the other power tubes) I had was noisy out of the box. I had to do the fritz mod to remove the hiss because tube rolling isn't really tube rolling when you have to wait days between tubes. Now I can swap them out with ease.
