Ok, so I have tried all my amps, these three headphones are what I focused on as they are my favorites. My previous favorite headphone setup was the modi 2 uber magni 2 uber. But now my new favorite is the Darkvoice amp. To my ears it just sounds better. It for sure has more power, but that is just a bonus. I am no expert, and its hard to put into words the difference, and that is the key here. The Darkvoice just sounds different. I am very happy with this purchase, and very surprised at how much I like this amp, I figured it would just be a fun thing to buy, but It has become my goto amp for listening. I use a Bifrost Dac, then the Darkvoice, then the headphones, and I would put this set up against anything I have heard to date. I am rambling, but I hope this helps in some way for anyone looking at this amp, if you are on the fence on buying this, allow me to push you over.
Thanks for the review. I am now seriously "tube-curious" - sounds bad doesn't it? Will wait for next drop now.
Indeed, it is the tubes.
Also consider the Little Dot series. Great bang for the buck and MANY tube rolling options. I love my LD III which also functions as a preamp in my bedroom system, which "warms up" the Virtue 2.2 amp's sound signature.
Well, joined the drop :) If I get in trouble @ home I will blame you ok? :-) All kidding aside - have you rolled any other tubes? Anyone else here have suggestions on tubes? I figure I'll order a few while I wait a week for the drop to end and another week for MD to get the order then another 3-4 weeks for the item to get to Canada. :-/
The RCA 6AS7G and 6SN7GTB slyvania(any brand) are good in expensive tubes to start. There are lot of different tubes you can roll depending on your budget. I use a Tung Sol VT231 and a Western Electric 421A(same a Tungsol 5998). There are subtle difference in what you hear depending on the combination of tubes you use.
