has anyone used the fiio btr5, and can tell if sound quality is as good or better?

Not the best answer since I know nothing about this product... but I have a BTR50 and I love it. To my ears it sounds great, I can't tell the difference between USB connection (no hi-res streaming) and Bluetooth. With the flexibility of Bluetooth/wired/balanced-unbalanced along with a great DAC, for not much more money you get much more product.

toynI recently got the Meze 99 Noir headphones, also picked up the Meze balanced cable... the difference is huge, I'll never use them single-ended again. If anyone is considering the BTR50 (or any other device that offers balanced) - go all the way and do it balanced!

I've never tried this, but the BTR5 is excellent either way.

I'm selling mine on ebay as I don't actually have headphones with a 2.5mm or 4.4 mm jack http://ebay.us/mW7HDw?cmpnId=5338273189

bookchinWhy? You can get an adapter like I’ve done from XLR to either (I have both adapters). I could have built them but it was easier to buy them. My cables which I don’t sell right now take anywhere from 12-630 hours to build, 1/3 cost is parts, 2/3 labor. That’s why my cables are expensive, plus I have 2 custom American made silver plated copper 22awg coaxial and non coax Teflon coated cables at a cost of $3.35 and $2.85 per foot respectively (no cheap Chinese occ garbage) and I have nearly 2800 feet left of the $3.35/ft coaxial version and only a few hundred feet of the non coax version. My geometry is inherently balanced and I don’t give customers the bullshit of upgraditis. I have a high end (single ended) called Reveal series and a balanced super high end called Reference series. Power cords I have 4 models and that’s so people can buy cheaper ones than the top two depending on their application and if it will make a difference. It varies by type of component. Btw, I have a FiiO Q5s with the THX module (too bad it doesn’t have good software like the $99 RadSone ES100 mk1 and mk2, which I have 5 of because the buttons on those units are garbage, worse on the mk2), and I also have the Audeze in-ear 32 ohm LCDi4 (along with many more Audeze phones for my 6 figure reference home system which took me 8 years to fully modify and build; it may be 6-8 years old but will beat out any system I know of, and the word of a true multi-billionaire - I looked him up - who has heard nearly every system at hundreds of meets, and wanted to buy my amp on the spot to which I declined, but offered to build him one but he only wanted to pay $40k for an $80k amp). The LCDi4 work great with the Q5s because the THX AAA-78 module yields 500mW per channel at 32 ohms which is what is really needed to drive the LCDi4 to perfection. Still sound much better on my home system though but the included $400 Audeze cable is only 4 feet long with 4-pin XLR termination for my custom built, cost-no-object, extreme TOTL performance, luxury $80k headphone amp (based on AMB labs Beta22 amp and Sigma22 power supply, with lots of extra custom circuitry and parts added) and power supply in dual chassis weighing 105 lbs. I also give custom scheduled demos for those living near western Massachusetts (3 miles from the Connecticut border) or whoever wants to travel further. I promise a mind blowing experience. EatMyDustbunnyI have an adapter for 2.5mm to 3.5mm that I bought for this dac I just see small portable dacs like this as part adapter/part dac. It's kind of unweildy to add the adapter to the dac. I might buy 2.5mm cables at some point if i buy new iems but with the current work from home setting i have no need for this dac.

bookchinBro, I got my XLR to 2.5mm and XLR to 4.4mm both on eBay for $25 and $30 each. They are very well made cables (one uses pure silver wire and the other is silver plated copper) and work exceptionally well! Why the hell would you buy a 2.5mm balanced to 3.5mm unbalanced adapter?!?! That defeats the whole point of buying a balanced DAC in the first place!! If you want an unbalanced DAC, for the price of this one you could get a much better unbalanced one!

Will this work with active speakers that I hook up to my MacBook?

If your active speakers have 2.5 or 4.4mm jacks, yes.

When I plug this into a MacBook Pro or an Android phone, connected to my V-Moda Crossfade II headphones with a 3.5mm -> 2.5mm cable, the sound sounds blown-out at fairly quiet volumes. Is something wrong with my unit, or my set up?

If you V-Moda is not balanced, this will not work well.

Is there a Lightning adapter included in the package? If not, where would I find one?

Would not be ideal as it may not handle the voltage, you're probably better off getting their other portable DAC the TC25i (TC35i is great too if you're looking for 3.5mm)
