Anybody have experience with these guys ? They're pretty cheap with their 390 & s35 with titanium , but I noticed that "USA design" but Chinese made ! That usually appears on your M-tech and I think Tac-Force (the steer away from brands imo far away) but $125 for 390&ti makes me at least curious ! https://atlanticknife.com/search?type=product&q=Defcon

RudolphHmmm....Amazon lists this as being made by Proelia? I own a couple of those, they seem well made and sturdy, but way too bulky and heavy for me, I've never carried or used the ones I have, to be able to say more than that Feels odd, these brands doing all these secondary lines... WE, i can understand, separate their high end stuff from the lower...same for Kizer, to a lesser extent... But brands like Artisan, now Proelia....just feels weird from smaller brands

Half a pound for a 3.5" blade? Dang... I don't see blade thickness listed on this one... What is that, like 6mm?

KavikI was thinking the same - something ridiculous. Pity, it's the first time in a long time that I've seen something at a superficial glance that looks interesting. Not worth any more investigation though; it isn't for my needs.

KizerAgreed... I don't get the combination of an overly thick blade, that short grind, and it being a hollow grind. All seems a bit contradictory. Dig the overall shape, but beyond that, i dunno...

You know that when it has 'Defcon' in the name it must be the end-all-be-all apocalypse survival tool. And why would I get the partially serrated version when it already has a great saw section on the thumb ramp?

Why's the steel listed as D2 "air-hardened"? Just marketing?

uh.... ok... let me back up for a bit. gonna simplify this as easy as i can mild steel is steel with low carbon content. you can heat, cool, etc. and it will not harden to a good degree. mild steel is not used in knives high carbon steels will harden if rapidly cooled (quenched) either air, oil, or water, depending on what the steel likes after hardening, steels are generally too hard to use, so the steel is baked at a consistent temperature. this causes the steel to soften to be usable. (for example, knife blades want hardness, so you would temper knives to be harder, whereas a punch would be tempered a bit softer but more resilient to impact) all knife steels undergo quenching and tempering. if they dont, steel wont hold an edge. you can get anything sharp (including mild steel), but edge holding is an important attribute in a good knife

method_burgerI appreciate the explanation! But, I knew both parts of that already (cooling rapidly to quench, and then heating and cooling slowly to temper). I was just as confused as you about what "air-hardened" means. I've heard of some steels that are nitrogen-quenched, but I haven't heard of air-quenching, so thanks for that tidbit of information.
