i looked into exhaust wraps - sometimes oil gets in the wrap and catches fire - this is a small risk according to my mechanic - scared me off.

Be careful. Yes heat wrapping your exhaust has benefits like preventing heat soak, but unless you're on a track the performance gains are very minimal. In addition this will slowly (actually rather quickly) rust anything you wrap it around. These wraps do a good job of holding any moisture in contact with your metal exhaust. So be prepared to replace your leaky exhaust header in about a year. Also, I'm not sure about the material this is made out of but be careful about oil leaks. Exhaust wrap + oil leak = wrapping your very hot exhaust in an oil soaked rag.

TLDR: Exhaust wrap will decrease engine bay temps and make the exhaust gasses flow faster, but not all headers and exhaust systems are made to the same quality, and you may screw up your exhaust system, as well as void your warrantee. Check with your header manufacturer, or do the better performing option and get ceramic coating done.

This stuff actually makes a huge difference. On turbo cars, heat energy is one of the key ingredients in spinning a turbine. More heat, the faster it spins up, the less lag and transient response. That being said, you really can't measure the difference between a wrapped and unwrapped manifold, but it is there. Plus, it keeps the heat from getting into your engine bay, reducing ambient engine bay temps and subsequently intake charge temps.
