I don't really understand why anyone would want a headphone case without any crush protection, the type of damage that headphones are most prone to. A hard-shell case in this form factor would have been great, this seems like a missed opportunity to me.

autoteleologyI dunno, I have a Slappa case and a MrSpeakers case, and while they’re hard-shell (and the red MrSpeakers case is particularly attractive IMO), they bend without too much finger force, and I think they would collapse and allow headphones to be crushed just the same if they were in my backpack and I fell on them. However, I DON’T think crush protection is anywhere near the type of damage headphones are most prone too. Far more likely it is to scratch an earcup, get them wet, crimp a cable, roll over parts with a chair, have a pet go for it, have a pen poke it or try to spill on it, etc. I travel about 6-7 times a year, backpack only (it’s the BEST way to fly), and I’m more worried about an explosion/leak of shaving cream or toothpaste than crushing. The reason I buy cases is similar to why I buy a headphone stand: to organize my stuff and keep all the accoutrements together in one place so I don’t forget or lose them. Compared to other cases, this actually has pockets, and my camera bags are too small for full-size headphones.

EvshrugI think your point about keeping things together is spot on.

  • Slappa / MrSpeakers cases are also soft-shell cases, they're just not as soft as this... lunch bag thing. Google Images "hard shell case", you mostly get images of things like the Pelican cases.
  • Crush protection is what differentiates a good case from throwing your headphones in a gallon-sized Ziploc bag, which would also prevent all of the forms of damage you mentioned and would cost about five dollars for a couple dozen at your local grocery store. This case prevents less damage than the Ziploc bag (which is air-tight and waterproof).

autoteleologyYeah, well a pelican case would be good for shipping (I’m well aware of pelican cases), and you can use a a ziplock if you want. Heck, you could probably fit this case inside a ziplock or pelican bag. I’m far, far more concerned about drops and scratches, which some sandwich baggie would do nothing for. And a pelican would need the foam inside to provide drop impact protection, and to keep things organized and from rattling around, you would either need to chop up the foam to fit ONE headphone, or get the foam in small bars if you want something modular to suit different contents. It depends on where the headphone is. In my house, I want something to organize the accessories and store whatever headphone is not in use, ideally something that can hang in the closet/shelf/hook. I have several headphones, so it’s best for the case not to be specific to one. I also want to keep out the cat and dust, and be splash-proof from my wife’s drinks (love her, but it’s a real concern). Traveling, I need a case in/strapped to a backpack, or able to sit in a guest room. I’m not worried about it getting crushed in a backpack or suitcase, but I do want all the bits and pieces together so I can take my “kit” out to listen in my room, and store all the pieces so I don’t lose anything. Same organizational ethos with an office, maybe more strongly so, also enough rain protection if I need to carry it in-hand to a taxi or train station. Now, shipping headphones freight, yep I would want crush resistance and a pelican. If I was on a boat or yacht (Not any time soon!), also would want a pelican! Might also want a pelican in this world:

The porter falls over ALL THE TIME, through time-contracting rain, and dragged through oily lakes by ghosts! Crush, waterPROOF seal, and basically armor is required for everything important in that world! But realistically, there’s a reason camera bags have been like this for decades. This will be good enough for most situations. Happy holidays!
